So if the other guy had bid $24.25 and you won it for $25.25 it would be a bad purchase, eh?

So if the other guy had bid $24.25 and you won it for $25.25 it would be a bad purchase, eh? Maybe I needed to be clearer. To win the auction, I would have had to bid an amount which would make it a bad purchase for me. It was a good purchase for him because he got it for less than his max bid. I could have bid $29 and still not get the item. My goal was to get something as cheap as possible not to make someone else to pay more. This evening, there was a 1 1/2 pound piece of Howardite that had 20+ bids and was at $79 with a few seconds left. When the auction was over it went for over $200. I didn't check for how many bids took place in the last few seconds but imagine they involved sniping software. I did an evaluation of what the item was worth to me and didn't even put in a bid. The goal of an auction for a buyer is not to win the auction. The goal for the buyer is get the item for less than maximum price they are willing to pay. I bid my max and was hoping to get the item for less than that. I've been buying slabs and rough on ebay for 20 years. I don't surf, but imagine a person can miss a wave and other ones come along. Lots of opportunities to bid and patience is rewarded.

Thanks for the info. The site is being rebuilt. I think I've seen them at lapidary shows and have seen them on ebay. I'm a bargain hunter and the math for making cabochons from expensive material doesn't work for me. I'm looking for inexpensive material to make inexpensive cabs. I have a good inventory of better BM cabs.

It's always fun to get a piece of rough at a "discount". It is just like catching that wave, though, unless it's a rare or exceptional piece.
The Howardite price was high - unless it was a legit top grade old-stock chunk. We used to buy good rough for $50/lb. Haven't looked for any lately.

Wow. With shipping, $140/lb for that Howardite was nuts. Granted I haven't priced any in years - but like you said, only 1/3 was good pattern.
We've bought lots of rough from them, and I'd trust their rough to be good cuttable material. I wouldn't have paid anywhere near that price, though.

i was the winner of that stone. Based on what BM is selling for, you got a good deal. I'm very particular with what I buy and look at the scenes in the slab. I've made a lot of BM cabs and I didn't see the potential. Maplestuff/orca could have probably got $40-50 for the slab. I bid what it was worth to me. I was surprised to be outbid so late in the auction.

Occasionally I will spend a half hour doing ebay searches. Yesterday, I searched on BM, Willow Creek, Blue Biggs, Biggs, Deschutes and Owyhee and didn't even put anything on my watch list. Recently I saw some nice Willow Creek slabs and was easily priced out. I bargain hunt and can still find bargains but not as easily as when I did a lot of buying.
