My rockhounding ebay/bargain huntin orders arrived today including the big Morgan Hill. I can't evaluate that until I cut it up. The Morgan Hill I bought years ago was darker and more solid. I bought material like this somewhat later and it is more problematic but makes nice cabs. These were all inexpensive purchases: Two single cab Willow Creek slabs Three Tahomas I cut up a small piece of Tahoma rough which is better than what I have left to cut but probably B cab material A small piece of Morgan Hill that I got 4 slabs from but two were unusable. I trimmed up what was left and If I get one nice cab out of it I've done well. Photographed dry and the color is typical of the lighter Morgan Hill material and both pieces have some quartz.

The design work begins. This will have to a flat top.

The design work begins. This will have to a flat top. This may seem like a dumb question but what makes a person decide if it's going to be a flat top? Is it the design, the thickness...both? Or personal preference?

I look at the front, the back and the sides. If the pattern is very shallow, I want to take off as little as possible. When the pattern goes front to back, I can dome it.

All of those have been converted to cabs. I am in active bargain hunting mode on ebay for new material. I am looking forward to working on these single cab slabs.

A little under a pound. Identified as agatize or opalized Blue Biggs? Pattern looks like Deschutes and I don't know how much is usable. I like to gamble and it was cheap. Hasn't been shipped. Thick Blue Biggs and I can split part of it. Shipped and maybe arrives tomorrow.

The BB piece was as good or better than the description. Next Friday, I should have my clutch replaced and should be bale to split it and get two 3 1/2 x 6 inch slabs close to a 1/4. That should produce about a dozen cabs of varying scenes.
The Willow Creek description was not as accurate. One killer cab and two or three others. At least I have something to work on and don't need my slab saw.
