Yesterday an Etsy customer asked me to make four pear shaped cabochons from Owyhee with blue. I don't do custom work. I explained that things go wrong so I couldn't quote a price, but would make the cabs and see how they came out. I had a slab and a small piece of rough that could be split. I drew some preforms and messaged her the pictures. On the slab she suggested a location for one of the cabs.
I've had a lot on my mind the last few days because of the power outage and wasn't focused. I took a 3/16" slice of the rough and that went fine. Taking the second slice my hand slipped and I fracture the second slab. Next should have been simple, cut two preforms off the slab. I've looked at the slab before and drew preforms on the other side. So I naturally started to cut the wrong side and I got some fractures. Next, I started grinding the 40x30 pear. It slipped out of my hand, the dop hit a wheel and the stone fractured. I gave the customer the bad news, but she is interested in seeing with what I come up with.
A lot of material I work with fractures, so I have a lot experience recutting into free forms. I finished 3 free forms, a problematic Tahoma and a problematic Willow Creek. I replaced the Owyhee picutres
