I'm thinking I'd like to try it. Not sure how to approach it, though. I do have a drill press, which I suppose is mandatory.

I have never tried it but at all of the gem and mineral shows there are tray after tray full of side drilled imported cabochons sold as beads. If it were me I would be trying to the drill the hole before cabbing. Actually even before grinding to the final shape so there would be nice flat surfaces to deal with but that would also mean drilling more volume. Have not seen many examples of it posted here to RTH.

Iin the one intarsia class I took, instructor drilled the side of my intarsia piece. Didn’t use a drill press, but a vise. I’ll check my notes. Hole went from side to side at the top, so cord could go through it.

Chuck Thanks, yeah I can't remember any threads about it, either.
I figured if I did it before I rough it out, that'll give me straight sides to rest it on. (Like you said.) I have long drill bits. Next thick stone I come across, I'll give it a go.

It's not so much about drilling a crossways through hole to hang a pendant, but to drill a shallow hole in which to glue an eyelet for hanging said pendant.
However it shows ways to hold the cab/slab while drilling.

I have drilled a few from side to side. Mostly ones that lend themselves to drilling from both sides and then reaming the hole with a burr to get to the size I want. Here are a couple that I found pictures of. I have done some others and they sell well. I drill with a press under water and start small. I drill before shaping the face or faces so I am drilling into a square edge.

Foredom makes a plastic vise that is made for holding things underwater. Might be worth looking at.

I haven't done side to side yet but I've done some fairly long holes in carved beads. We have a little drill press, but I also use my Foredom and do it by hand, With beads I mostly use ball end burrs instesd of drills, they are much easier to hold in place when starting a hole, don't skitter off the mark. Nice thing doing it by hand is you hold the piece with a finger in the spot where your drill/burr will come out, then as soon as you feel it begin to poke through reverse it, finish the hole, and never a blow out.

Knowing me, I'd put a hole in my finger. LOL!
I took a tip from Tommy, I believe, who starts with a smaller bit and then moves up. I've been pretty lucky avoiding major blow outs. Smaller ones, yes. Most can be saved with the bevel.
