The green 2000 Tundra was bought new. Has 340,000 hard miles and served well with few repairs.
Engine and drive train tight as a drum. May need front struts or ball joints.
Recently modified for construction work, dragging trees to clear building site and off roading.
The black 2006 Tundra was bought used this year with 120,000 miles with plans of long service too.
The 2000 to 2006 4.7 liter Tundra said to be one of the most reliable trucks ever built after 20 years of reviews.
Come to find out the 2006 model has an engine that had overheated to the point of needing replacement. Along with a leaking radiator.
I found a 2005 model in the junkyard with low miles. Totaled by a rear impact and bought the engine out of it for $2000.
Local mechanic installed it for $1800. Total investment in truck a steep $19,000.
Drove it home yesterday and seems to run like a charm.
Hoping for 300,000-500,000 trouble free miles out of it. These trucks are known for going 1,000,000 miles without major overhaul.
The alternative was to buy a new truck at a much higher price. Am trying to save money here and don't care for the new Tundra's.
The sister vehicles with same engine/drivetrain to this truck are the Lexus 470, earlier Sequoia and Land Cruiser with the 4.7 liter engine and 4WD.
In shopping for an engine out of these vehicles a couple of used car dealers mentioned that they ship many of these models to Africa and Australia as taxi and safari vehicles.
They said there is a big demand for them overseas in general because of their reliability with less concern about the mileage than most vehicles.
The engine is expensive and complex. Daul overhead cam and 4 valves per cylinder. Lots of aluminum. 1000 pounds of pollution controls(exaggerated). But well designed.
So this was my solution to having some reliable vehicles.
