I recently got into making chainmaille. i want to try out some blackened stainless steel rings. Problem is the only place i can find them charges $40 for the process ontop on the price for rings. I read that tumbling SiC with stainless will turn it black or a dark gray. Does anyone have experience with this? Below is a copy of what read.
THE RINGS ARE TUMBLED IN BLACK SILICON CARBIDE FOR 4 DAYS. THE SOLUTION GETS INTO THE PORES OF THE STAINLESS STEEL. THE DARK SURFACE WILL NOT RUB OFF OR FADE OVER TIME.

All stainless is not created equal. I know my stainless shot I use in a vibe will turn black if I space it out and tumble to long. It can be cleaned pretty easy though. So not sure of the Silicon carbide.
