Hi everybody! I haven't done much with rocks lately, and quite truthfully I didn't believe I would ever be painting rocks! We had a family get-together about a month ago and thought we would collect some rocks on the beach and paint them. I found out it was very addictive. We donated that batch to our local club, but when I got home I thought I would use up some of the extra paint, then we bought more, then more brushes, then ........you know how it goes. This is my first attempt at painting pictures on rocks, so I hope they are suitable for posting. The rocks are all about 11 inches across the widest area and are about 3/4 inch thick. I sprayed them with an acrylic coating to waterproof them. These 3 slabs had been laying around my shop for at least a decade. My first go at it. A tiger on petrified wood: ******************************************************************************************************************* My next try. A cougar on nephrite jade. I've got a little more work to do on this one - he doesn't look mean enough: ******************************************************************************************************************** My last (and most frustrating) attempt. A lion on rainbow obsidian. I saw a picture online of this black-mane (shawl?) lion that I really liked, so I gave this guy a black lower mane (is that still part of the mane? It is more like a black shawl) . (Note to self - you cannot paint yellow or golden brown on obsidian without it turning green. I used no blue or green paint in this painting.): ******************************************************************************************************************** Thanks for looking!

Thanks for sharing them. Those are excellent and I think that the lion is really well executed. The cougar is well done with the tree in the foreground and the rock's color and texture making the eyes see the "forest background".

It occurred to me as I was painting tha lion that he could have been painted on bassalt and maybe the yellows and browns wouldn't have turned green. My wife tells me I'm color-blind, so maybe I'm just seeing things.

Very tastefully done, and as was stated before the cougar one does have an epic background that suggests a forest setting. Or possibly a greenish or half-moon-behind-a-cloud-lit cliff in the background. All in all a totally worthwhile part of your hobby!

I've changed the cougar since I posted the picture - looks a little more like he would like to bite you. Haha! The jade was not a good quality piece, so this was much better use of the slab than polishing it amd putting it on a shelf.

Sounds like you wanted to find a use for it, and did! No sense in hiding something away when you can make a masterpiece out of it. I'd like the see the new new biting cougar.

Wow, was not what I was picturing when I read the title of thread. Definitely thought there were going to be some pics of smiley faces, hearts and such painted on dollar store rocks (like I've done w daughter years ago lol). the artistic talent of members here never ceases to amaze me. Great job!

It's all in the eyes. I'll post a revised photo when I'm really done with him this time. My biggest critic (who could that be?) doesn't like the new "mean" look.
