I have an old 8" arbor with a grinding wheel, expando- drum, and leather polishing wheel. I've been using silicon carbide wheels that were given to me (not sure what grits) they have done the job ok, but the constant grooving of the wheel is not enjoyable. Is it worth it to get diamond wheels just for pre-shaping? I mainly like to shape pretty big agates and petrified wood, up to baseball or bar of soap size. Of course i want to do even larger rocks=) My current method for pre-shaping and tumbling: - rough shape cut/grind with a homemade trim saw ( mk hot-dog blade) - do the final shaping on the grinding wheel - Toss into a 12 or 15lb barrel course grind - into the lot-o to finish. yes it really can handle almost anything that you can squeeze into the barrel!! I've been experimenting with going from the ginding wheel to 100 grit on the expando- drum then straight into the 120-220 in the lot-o. Seems to be working. Are the THK Diamond Wheels on ebay a good choice? Will these bench grinder wheels work for lapidary? www.ebay.com/itm/POWERTEC-15510-5-8-Arbor-100-Grit-Silicon-Carbide-Grinding-Wheel-8-x-1/123973089718?epid=3006829466&hash=item1cdd5f39b6:g:23MAAOSwr0Rdyp6q

Rough grinding stone. try the not so old way. Silica carbide wheels . 80 grit is what i use on fire agate rough before the diamond grinding or tumbler runs.

Really liking the Supergrinder. also good to know about McGills Wharehouse! All the suggestions sound spot on, thanks guys. Will the 220 grit wheel on the other side remove the scratches left by the super grinder if i wanted to put a rock straight into the lot-o? Can anyone recommend a good source to buy 8" silicon carbide wheels so i can compare prices? I'm still confused if i need a special silicon carbide wheel for rocks, or if any silicon carbide bench grinder wheel would work.
