I went to AZ for a few days before Easter. The primary purpose of the trip was to visit some friends in Phoenix, but I managed to sneak in some time for rocks. On the way over I looked for a petrified wood site south of Holbrook I had been to a few years ago. Working strictly from memory, I'm not sure I found the exact site, but managed to pick up a couple pounds of decent material in about an hour. It was chilly and very windy and since I was just getting over a cold, thought I'd better not press my luck. Then, on the way back from Phoenix I stopped at a huge rock shop near Holbrook where I got a great deal on rough petrified wood--$1/pound! I also got a few pieces of rose quartz and some geodes for the kids. My wife complained a little about "losing an hour at the rock shop," but in the end she walked out of there with a nice sodalite candle holder! I could have spent more time/money there, but I was running out of both. Here's the pet wood I collected: Here's the stuff I bought: Some rose quartz... ...and my wife's sodalite candle holder! - Robert

That pet wood is going to be so pretty when it's finished. Heck, it's pretty now! I just love doing pet wood - it almost always turns out fabulous.
Love the rose quartz too! The sodalite candle holder is nice.

Wow, you collected some beautiful stuff, looks as good as the stuff you bought and you don't even need to break it up. I'd be in a big hurry to head back there.

Alice, the candle holder was about $12.
KD, the diameter of the hole is a smidgen over 1.5", it's designed for tea light candles.
I'm excited about starting on the wood. I should have enough for 2-3 batches now...time to buy more grit!

Hello,
I have said it in the past and I'll say it again ... "if you collect your own rock ... it is always much nicer than you can buy in a rock shop".
You see when you go out and find your own rock ... you have time to relax, time to seek adventure, time to share companionship (if you have a collecting partner), time to learn about rocks, their environment and yes, time to learn about yourself, time to reflect back on pasts trips and time to look forward to future trips, time to ask yourself ... how many people have crossed these exact same grounds before me and just passed these stones by? and all the while getting some great fresh air and exercise.
Oh yea ... it's much nicer when you gather your own!
Great batch of stones ... they will work up beautifully,
John
