This is a very useful but simple knot! A slight difference from a "Taut Line Hitch" but better.

Went through Navy boot camp (San Diego) in 1968. The bowline knot is another one that I've used a lot since then. RickB

For some weird reason, I really like knots. They fascinate me. But, I can't tie a decent knot if my life depended on it.

I use the taut line hitch modified by using 6 half hitches to tie on hooks and lures to my fishing line ! The knot is stronger than the line and wont break.

For reasons I've never understood I must have been born without the gene that allows one to be good at tying knots Even a simple knot to secure a load in my truck is a mystery to me and I always end up using tie-downs. Even in my scouting days in the Royal Rangers - a church based version of the Boy Scouts - all the other kids seem to grasp a new knot quickly but not me. I would work and work and work to learn it then promptly forget. Except for what I learned as "the fisherman's knot" - maybe because I had a lot of practice back in the day when I fished a lot. Looks like they are calling it the "improved cinch knot" here.

One thing I noticed a long time ago; I'm left-handed, trying to learn knots from a right-handed person is difficult at best, they do it "backwards".

I was never good with knots, just OK. My Dad was outstanding, studied knots, used many different ones. I was good with fishing knots from the Improved Clinch to the Bimini Twist. I could also splice lines and did many for my boats over the years. Could I do them now? Most likely knot, just don't have the mind for them. When I moved to Utah, I took a canyoneering course that included important knots, the Bowline was one.

This thread reminds me of a silly joke:
A length of rope walks into a bar. The bartender looks at him and says "get out, we don't serve ropes in here!"
The rope goes outside and cuts himself in half and ties his two sections together. Not pleased with his appearance, he takes a comb and combs out his ends.
He walks back into the bar and the bartender says "Hey, aren't you that rope I just kicked out?"
And the rope replied......
Wait for it....
"No, I'm a frayed knot."
No groans please. I don't write 'em, I just pass 'em along.
