I picked this piece up at the St Louis Gem and Mineral show from the Eastern Missouri Society for Paleontology. The label says Metasequia from the Hell Creek formation in Montana. It leaves a lot of rust on the fingers when handled. Is there a good way to seal or otherwise prepare it for display?

How about Permalac NT? Comes in liquid and in spray.

How should I go about cleaning it before coating it? The surface has a pretty loose layer of rust. Nylon/steel brush and some sort of soap?

Before the spray wipe it down with alcohol or acetone. They flash off pretty fast and will remove fingerprint oils.

I have removed surface iron deposits by soaking in baking soda and vinegar, too. Then scrubbed with the scotchbrite or another type of green, kitchen scrubber. Agree to clean everything with acetone. Wear gloves when doing so, to prevent finger oils from getting on the pet wood. .

The label says Metasequia from the Hell Creek formation in Montana. The label should have spelled it "Metasequoia" (aka, "Dawn Redwood"). Assuming that you want to keep this as a specimen, you can dilute Wellbond glue to a very thin consistency in water and lightly coat the surface. There are also preparations that are marketed for fossils (Paleobond, Butvar). I have some Hell's Creek Formation Metasequoia cones somewhere that are a bit "rusty," but not so much that I've considered coating them with anything.

I'd like to get this piece to the point where my son can take it off the shelf and handle it without getting covered in rust. I have another piece from another site, about two feet long and a couple inches across that I want to seal because the center isn't as petrified and wants to splinter apart.
