I ordered 10 lbs. of Lace agate. It showed it in fist sized chunks, but when I got it, it was a 10 lb. chunk. I plan on getting a trim saw before long, but even that won't cut a piece that big. Will I destroy it completely if I bust it up? I've seen all the pretty lace agate everyone is showing and I want some real pretty pieces. What do you all think? Trish

My luck with cracking it for tumbling was not good. There is a lot of layering and variability in the material that make for a lot of waste. You can get nicely shaped tumbled pieces but you loose a tremendous amount of your original mass. I do not saw, but maybe some folks that do will advise you to slab it later rather than bust it up.

As with most any of the rocks, things are always nicer when slabbed but since a lot of us don't have saws, busting is all we can do. I have several very nice pieces from Llana that is going to get whacked. That's a freakin big chunk, going to take a few good whacks to get it workable.

Thanks for the advice. I'm trying to get a few pieces that I can cut. It would have been nice to get what I ordered. He said they were in fist to softball size chunks. I'll think I'll hold off awhile before whacking it. Trish

Good score, that stuff is beautimus.......
I'd be hesitant to whack it too. If you need to put the hurt on it, get you a set of good chisels and find a natural fracture/fissure to sink it into, then let 'er go. Be sure to wear glasses and pants.

I think you miss read that- It musta said Basketball Size!!!! Holy Majoly!! Before you wack it see if someone here would slab it for ya (I think Kim is the only one with a saw big enough) or else maybe trade it for some smaller stuff? It may have not been what you ordered but I think you made out pretty good- That is a first rate chunk oh rock (where did you get it- maybe they are gonna try to sell you the saw next!)

I got it from Rainborc on Ebay. He's being very nice and has offered to send me some smaller stuff, but the rock is so beautiful, I really can't complain. I haven't answered him yet, but I will probably just keep what I got and wait till I can do something with it. I definitely wouldn't leave bad feedback. I got a beautiful piece of Crazy Lace, it just wasn't what the auction offered, but I'm happy. Trish

That is a beautiful piece of Lace Agate, the colors are so vibrant. To break it apart I would find the cracks and use a chisel and whack along the cracks. They are already there, and it should break easily at that point. I had some large pieces that I broke apart a while back and I used the cracks to help me break them up. It only took one good whack to break them along the cracks. If there wasn't a crack it took me several good whacks to get the piece broken. Tami

Thanks Kim, That's great of you to offer. I already have $27.00 in this rock. I don't think I'll add another $16.00 for shipping right now. I don't suppose you live in Arkansas? Rainboroc is being real nice. He's going to send me some small ones, so I think I will just enjoy this one the way it is for awhile. Thanks so much. Trish

would it work to take a 4" angle grinder with a tile saw diamond blade in it and cut the rock where you want as deep as you can and then put a chisel in the score and then hit it. it might be weakened enough to break where you want just an idea

Warren, That's what i was thinking. Make some small cuts where you can and stick a chisel in the cuts and whack away! But me? *Grunt* I would throw a towel over it and rare back and WHAM! Then curse a little if it doesn't break and repeat. But that's how I get out my frustrations. Kinda theraputic. ;D. When I don't have anything to whack, I get stressed That is a beautiful piece of stone. Ya done good on that one, mis-sized or not. Be sure and post pics when you break/cut it up, K? cookie

Thanks for all the suggestions. I may break it some day, but for now I'm just going to put it on a shelf and enjoy it. Trish

Thanks Kim, I'll keep that in mind. I may just try to talk my husband into letting me get a bigger saw than I planned. Trish
