ok i got my saw in a bind last week and banjo said someone told him if you cut a piece of obsidian it would get the tweeks out. so i had the piece of mahogany obsidian i got from banjo handy and i do believe it worked. this slab is just a knockout! my child just started ball and one of her team mates came up to me yesterday and asked if i collected anything but before i could answer her she said she collects rocks. she was picking up grey driveway gravel and showing me how "beautiful" it was. i told her i tumbled rocks and made things and that i would bring her something. i had intended to take her a pouch with tumbled rocks today but ran out of time to drive back to my house for them and get my child to practice so i took the matching heel to this slab to the budding rockhound. i don't know who got more joy the giver or the receiver. the look on her face was so priceless. she ran to show her dad and kept telling me it was the most beautiful rock she'd ever seen. i told her it was volcanic glass. i'm glad i didn't take the pouch today because i had 13 followers after practice begging me to bring them some tomorrow. i will make 13 pouches tonight. kim

That is a beautiful pieces of obsidian, one of prettiest I have ever seen. Nothing is more satisfing then seeing the wonderment in a childs eyes when you share what you know and what you enjoy with them. I don't know any child that doesn't like rocks. I know it was great seeing the delight in my nephews face when he opened his rock tumbler that I gave him at Christmas. Tami

Kim, that is just gorgeous, I can see why she thought it was the most beautiful rock she'd ever seen. Kids are so great for showing their true appreciation. Can't wait to see what you make out of that stuff.

those stripes are translucent and it is really cool held up in the sunlight.
ok i've got all my little gold pouches filled with tumbled rocks. not my favorite look for the pouches but the velvet ones would end up as cat fur pouches at my house. i dug around and got lots of the big ones & put them loose in a box for them to hand grab from. now i find this really fun. i've got to do this for her school mates too before school is out. i need more pouches!
makes me feel a little better that i have something to share as i'm never that mom bopping down the hall at school with the designer cupcakes. li'l debbie can have that job lol. rocks are much more fun!

Ahh that's a lovely piece! It is great whenever you meet someone that collects rocks...regardless of their age., but so much more exciting when you can share something with them that's so appreciated.

Hiya Rocky,
Oh yea ... you got to love that Mahogany Obsidian ;D
That piece looks great when it is back lit ... are you able to look through the piece and see the individual flow lines? Those are some of my favorites ... you know along with all of my other favorites ;D

yes john you can see through it and see the flow lines. if i'm not doing this right so you can see the light coming through just feel free to tell me how to do it right. trying to hold the slab in 1 hand and the camera in another causes a parkinson effect and i hope it's not too blurry . kim

Oh yea ...
I love that material. I make custom designed cabs from it and people are really excited to be able to hold it up and see the specific flow patterns of the material when it was a molten magma.
Too cool!
Some times you can find vents that resemble small tornados ... when they are cut right .. they are absolutely gorgeous!
Oh yea .. that is the good stuff ;D
