I recently sold this cab and showed it to my wife. I said I liked the scene, which is the term I use when I take a photo of anything. I consider it a scene and crop the scene into the scene I want. When I but a slab I look for the scenes that will make a cab. My wife who has a degrees in English and Studio Art said that is wrong and a scene should only refer to a landscape. I have neither of those degrees. Here's the cab:

You can call it whatever you want. It's your creation.
According to dictionary.com:
noun 1. the place where some action or event occurs: He returned to the scene of the murder.
2. any view or picture.
3. an incident or situation in real life.
4. an embarrassing outbreak or display of anger, strong feeling, or bad manners: Please don't make a scene in such a public place.
5. a division of a play or of an act of a play, usually representing what passes between certain of the actors in one place.
6. a unit of action or a segment of a story in a play, motion picture, or television show.
7. the place in which the action of a play or part of a play is supposed to occur.
ETA: #2 says it all!

For a picture that you detect in a slab, cab, or rock formation, gem inclusion, etc., the term mimetolith is often used. The picture can be a landscape scene, animal, or anything else.

Dr. R.V. Dietrich, who coined the word 40 years ago, created a web page at his university's site here that explains and shows examples. A few of mine made it onto his page and book.

I call them by the general term "picture stones", and then provide some general suggestions as to what a prospective buyer might see in the cab. I always try to give at least two suggestions because, as we all know, some people are simply unable to see what we think is so blindingly obvious! I don't care what they see, but I think that more suggestions are better than one or none.
Here's an example:

I did some web searches and they are truly deficient; more interested in selling than educating. The best answer I found was "pattern" and that was mentioned very little. From the definition I found of "mimetolith" it really doesn't address the cab picture I posted. I couldn't find any references to my term.

"Scene" seems reasonable to me, although my gut tells me an abstract form or image isn't really a scene. Image is more general. If selling is the goal, I'd stay away from 4-bit words like mimetolith (even though I really like it.)
Along the lines of different people seeing different things, I'll abstain from stating what I see in this lovely cab on the grounds that it could incriminate me.

Upside down, I see the image of a topless woman wearing a rather goth corset.

Can we label this an abstract design if we can't call it a landscape?

I haven't worked with a huge amount of Exotica/Sci Fi jasper. The pattern on the bottom is fairly common and I haven't framed a 'capture' of it. What was in the center was unusual.

well taking into account that I am knot the goodest at English, it being my first and only language, I am of the opinion that stardiamond 's avatar depicts a Scene of a desert sunrise, but I would describe the 5th cab here forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/post/1079552/thread as having the Image of a rose or simply as having a rose in it. so I suppose I would have to say a scene is usually a landscape in my vernacular
