QuailRiver ( I broke this out into a separate thread) Rockoonz, could you post a close up picture of one of them in place when it's convenient?. I think I know how you make them and sounds like a great idea. Just curious how they stay tight and not release. Thanks Henry

I wasn't as inventive as Rockoonz - when we got our 18" it had that "extra" threaded hole with nothing in it - but I did have some all-thread here.
I cut a piece of that and put a cap nut on the jaw end. Double-nutted on the back end so I can tighten it with a socket. Nut / lock washer / washer inside the adjustable jaw to keep it tight.

HankRocks here's an older pic of a couple versions of the jack. It's an adaptation of a ball joint removal tool for old double wishbone front suspensions on old cars. I will add a pic of one in use as soon as I get to a place where I need one on one of the saws. Edit: as you can see, this particular 14 inch HP saw in my collection has a built in one as well, I use it for smaller rocks

Here it is with the end of a piece of plume we collected at graveyard point. As you can see it comes in handy.

I will be over to the local hardware store after this Christmas noise is over in a few days to get parts to build a couple. Thanks for posting the pictures. Once again, a simple solution saves the day!! I have been paying more attention and using blocks of wood to fill the big gap that happens with certain rocks. So far they have all cut very well with no slippage issue. Still plan on gluing some rocks as they are just do not lend themselves to clamping. The larger flat biscuits from Woodard/Walker and the flat Singleton Ranch material need to be glued. I did find a treasure in someone's curb trash the other day walking the dog, 2 brand new pieces of 4X6 lumber almost 4' long each. Doing my best jamesp imitation I brought them home! Going to have a friend cut them into 6 inch pieces. "One man's trash.......".

Brilliant invention. "adjustable shim". I use a pile of shims to do the same thing. But this shim can be adjusted in place !

this is a really good idea, in my experience most people who use a vice professionally end up bending or breaking their vices because they use the same end all the time and never bother to support the other side
