Hi All,
I just received 3 Lbs of Hematite, and wanted to start a batch in my 3 Lb tumbler. Any successful recipes one wishes to share?
Thanks,
Scott

Hello Scott, I do not have a recipe to share, but I did want to say "WELCOME". It is always good to see new rock heads . I know how Hematite is to work with on a cabbing machine (very messy), I think tumbling it would be the best possible way ;D. Have a great day, John

i've never attempted Hematite either.....but with a MOH of 6.5, it should do ok on a "normal" one week per step cycle.
on a side bar, did you know that according to ancient lore, large surface deposits of hematite mark the site of ancient battles, where the blood of fallen soldiers flowed into to the ground?
Hematite is derived from the Greek word for "blood".
good luck, Scott, let us know how you make out, KD

Just a bit of advice, having tumbled hematite... tumble it alone... when it's tumbling, it will basically rust the water it's in... thus turning everything a nice blood red color... and if you tumble it with porous or soft stones, it has the chance of basically dying them red as well... Also, might want to invest in gloves... after working with the stones, I looked like I had commited mass murder... my hands were blood red for a few days...
Just a precaution...

Thanks for the advice. I'll plan on running them alone. Just waiting for my Lortone 33B to arrive...
Thanks again,
Scott

Scott, I have tumbled some hematite that I got from the Spokane mine in Montana and some turned out really good and others didn't turn out as well, I imagine if you tumble them alone you will get better results. I think I would have done better if I had, had a whole load of hematite alone. Tami

I have read that you must tumble them with low density material, other rocks or plastic. Else you will either have: 1) Too low a level for proper tumbling and they will slide and go flat on one side, unsmoothed on the other or 2) Too heavy a load for your tumbler due to the high density.

Hematite is very heavy, and it wears away quickly. So with 3 pounds of Hematite thats probably less than 1/2 of a 3lb barrell (so add pellets).
Also your pellets and everything else will be stained blood red, and no amount of soap tumbling will get it out. I used surgical gloves when I was messing with them after advice from this board, and it was one of the best tips I got.
I had a hard time crushing the hematite that I bought (I got 10lb's from the Rockshed at a great price), so I used a tile saw to cut it into chunks.
I am running the hematite alone now in 600, and cant wait to see if I can get that metallic shine that I am hoping for

Just about finished with a load. stage one completely chewed through the lid of my thumlers barrel, and deposited a massive rusty mess
stages 2-4 seem to leak a little, maybe due to the fine metallic dust that is getting into the seal
anyhow, it looks great and is almost done, but would never do it again.
I started putting a seal of plastic wrap over the barrel before I put the o ring on, which helps with the leakage. I use the glad stuff that is translucent and slightly thicker
just make sure the side with the wrap is not wearing against anything

I have tumbled self collected hematite that was mixed with jasper. The jasper etched faster than the hematite. My only advice is consider stage 4 for 2+ weeks to get a better polish. Hope you are happy with the results.

This has to be a resurrection record: 6077 days since initial post (or 16 years, 7 months and 21 days). As an aside Tiger Iron is one of my favorites (I like contrast) and it is primarily Red Jasper/Tiger Eye/Black Hematite. Welcome boournesAl

Would you run Jaspilite alone? Taconite hematite and layered Jasper. Don't want to mess up other stones but the stage 1-40lb. barrel holds a lot and I usually mix in other stones of similar hardness. Thanks, appreciate any advice.
