My husband has decided it's time to do some landscaping. Our yard is on a very steep angle so when he decided to put in a garden, it meant making levels down the hill side and he's done an excellent job so far, but ran into a bit of a glitch. He's making a desending rock path to the garden and, at a very important turn, encountered a BIG rock. It must be removed. Today he asked me if I would get us a new hammer, a special kind of hammer. He didn't know what it was called but described it as having "a hammer head on one side and, instead of a claw, a solid piece. Not a thin pick, but more like a hoe, just not bent down.". I tried to contain myself. I have been trying for a year now to justify the exspence of a rock hammer. Our regular hammer had about bitten the dust and I knew what was needed. But $30+, how could I make him see my point? And he just put it in my lap. ;D ;D ;D "OK Honey, I'll do that." I had to try it out first. I hand rolled $20.00 worth of pennies today (I gotta get a life...) and used that money plus a credit card to get it, so now I have the sympathy factor working for me as well. It does bust rocks sweet, cookie

Hello Cookie,
Now that sounds like a deal there!
Really push the issue ... go and put a bandiad on a couple of your fingers and when he asks how you hurt yourself ... you can tell him that you got paper cuts while rolling the pennies in paper holders ;D
Now get to work!

Saving and then rolling coins is how I was able to make a $400.00 first payment on my new desktop computer from Dell. Congratulations on your new rock hammer, I think I am going to have to get me one of those for some of the bigger rocks I am getting, I am going to have to cut them down to size before I can put them through my trim saw. nice hammer cookie! i have a nice savings going that was started just on rolled change. any change i get back from 1 penny to 99 cents gets rolled and put in savings. if my total somewhere is $7.02 i won't give the 2 pennies on purpose and the change goes to savings. sometimes they sabotage me by throwing in 2 pennies so they won't have to make the change . kim

Nice hammer, Cookie! Sounds like hubby is working his tail off with the landscaping! I remember the pics you posted of your house and backyard a while back - it was beautiful as it was. You'll have to post pics when it finished, I'd love to see what he has done.
I have been saving change, then robbing my piggy bank for years. When I waited tables, I got it filled up pretty fast, now it takes a while longer. I remember when it was announced that Lowes was comin' to town. I LOVE Lowes and decided that's where I would spend my piggy bank. By the time they opened, my piggy bank was stuffed full and I had close to $400. And I had a great day at Lowes!
It's amazing how fast that change adds up!
Kim, I do the same as you. Even though I might have the 27 or whatever cents in my handbag, I always give them a dollar so I can get more change for my piggy bank. llana

Lucky you Cookie, nice hammer. Did you buy it locally or online? Sure looks a lot easier to use than that old splitting mall I have but it works soooooo.
I do the same thing, no matter if it's check or cash, always go to the next dollar up so I can get more change. I always saved mine for my grandkids, I started savings accounts for each of them to put it in and plan on giving it to them as graduation presents. Have to admit though, I dig into it occasionally when something comes up that I don't have $$ for.

I metal detect and rolling coins is nothing new to me (I actually got a tumbler to clean all the coins I find- ha silly me) I found over 900 pennies last year alone! Nice hammer- now I would have used those quartz cuts to justify a rock saw?

Hey Cookie Lucky you! But may I ask how one would use that? Just whack away with the "chisel" side? Is this stronger than a regular hammer?
I've seen these, but always wondered

Tweets, I have a cocrete pad that will one day have a shed on it, but in the mean time, that's where I break rocks. I cover them with a towl (wear goggles, it you don't want to be blinded by a wayward shard) and whack with the hammer end. Theis is heavier than a regular hammer and I couldn't believe how much easier it broke the rock. I'm used to swinging, cussing, and swinging some more, but it just took a couple of whacks with this baby. The head weighs 15 oz. and I have a lot of upper body strength (for a girl ). The chisel end I used on fracture lines in the rock so it would split and not fracture more. I got it at Ace hardware as a "masonary hammer". My husband will use the chisel end to dig out the rock. Then it's allll mine (hehehehe). I will take pics of the progress to show you guys. Now, keep in mind, my husband (God bless his well meaning heart) can barely find his rear end with both hands, so this should be interesting cookie

I got one of those for Christmas -- an Estwing. I do like cookster, put the rocks on concrete and whack away. I've had better luck starting with the pick side, but that might be because my rocks come with a lot of holes and crevices. Definitely never do this without goggles. Shards go flying everywhere.

I have a 2 pound mini sledge & can hardly dent any of the rocks I have - I have some that are polished by mother nature (they have a glassy shine on them already) that are the bugger to whack! I'm still getting nowhere with that 2 pound sledge - I whack pretty hard, but I'm scared to break something that shouldn't be broken
