Hi guys. I purchased this stone whilst in Antwerp, Belgium. Sadly the store owner only spoke limited English and did not know the translation from Dutch to English for the name of the stone. The Dutch name was "Kiezel Tuff", which I think roughly translates to Volcanic Pebble / Stone. Does anyone have any ideas what it is? Many thanks in advance

Although most tuff is porous, some tuffs are layered and are dense enough to take a soft polish (e.g., rhyolitic welded tuffs like "Wonderstone"). Haven't seen any that look like yours, but could be from the volcanic region in Germany just south of the Netherlands, Italy, Canary Islands, France, or elsewhere. Other than suggesting that you google some photos, I can't help with a locale.

Most likely not Pat. It looks as if it has been sitting in organic black muck for many years judging by the dark blueish tint. Mucky salt marshes and mucky bottom acidic rivers turn rocks such a blackish blueish color.

Doesn't look translucent enough for that, and too dark. If the word "tuff" hadn't been mentioned, I would have guessed Polish flint, though not the usual color for most of that.

It does seem to have very similar characteristics to flint. Could it be blue flint?
