While in some badland terrain last week, we did a little bit of rockhounding. Any petrified wood I've found there in the past has been crumbly and useless for tumbling, so I was surprised to find a few tumbling size pieces of nicely agatized petrified wood. Just a few pieces, but I'll tumble them up and see what I get. My wife outdid me big time though, with this great petrified branch with a nice knot on it. Nice and solid too, but it won't ever see my tumbler -- I've never found petrified wood with a knot in it before, so this is a show piece, not a smasher-upper. Anyway, here's the branch, with the knot showing: Here's a different view, with the knot on top, showing that it sticks up from the branch... the knot is where a branch was coming out of the main branch, leaving this raised stump. And finally, here's a shot of the end of the branch, showing the ring structure: Okay, so it's not a tumbling pic, but it's tumbling related so I'm posting it anyway ;D

WoW that is awesome. Now you have me wondering how long it takes for wood to become petrified. I mean, that looks like it was cut off flush, not just broken at the knot. Wouldn't it be neat to have it dated. Great find and I agree, it's definitely a keeper!!

Definitely a great find. I think you could at least polish the bottom of the branch (that is shown in the pic). That looks like it would take a great polish.
Good job on the cool find.

That's a pretty neat piece! I wouldn't smash it up either.
Great find Rollingstone!

Isn't that amazing? It looks like you could put a match to it.

Hi Rollingstone , I bet you got a buzzzz when this piece was found. No , don't temper with it unless you want to polish the end of it.
Thanks for sharing
