Hey folks, I picked up a Harbor Freight flex shaft Saturday and for the first few mins things were going great. It’s powerful (1/4 HP) Variable speed foot pedal is the way to go Slowish (15K RPM) Handle is bigger than expected Handle gets hot quickly.
The aluminum handle gets hot quickly. I was going to insulate it with neoprene but that could shorten the life. I realize it was only 40 bucks; still I don’t want to disrespect the materials that went into making it. Hopefully they won’t throw it away when I take it back.
Now I’m on the hunt for a dremel w flex shaft. I’ve held their FS and the size seems better (arthritis issues). Who has one? what model? Did you get all the attachments or just some?
The reason I ask that last one is I am looking at the 4300 in the blue box (w 9 attachments). I figure that’s going to fulfill my rock and general handy human tasks.
**Also did you know (yes probably) that you can use a variable speed pedal with your variable speed dremel even if it didn’t come with one? I got the idea and tried it out with the HF pedal.** Talk to me goose!

Own the Dremel 4000......basic kit since I previously owned another Dremel for more than 10yrs and over that time accumulated literally 100's of wheels, bits, saws and stones......purchased the Dremel Flex kit, again very basic.......haven't considered a VSP, I don't spend extended periods with that tool since I shape and grind with faceting diamond dics...mostly.
The Dremel Flex shaft can be purchased most anywhere Dremel's are sold.......it really helps with keeping the machine clean and much easier to manipulated the bits/wheels around the stone with more precise care. You might also consider a smaller (not real small) jewelers vice that can be mounted on stationary surface, to hold the stone down while shaping, grinding/polishing.......beats trying to hold the stone in one hand and the Flex in the other, "been there-done that" with little success....!

I’ve shot some rocks around the garage accidentally when holding in hand. Thanks for the vice advice!
