hi all after one of our guest gave the tip about the silicon to hold down a cab for drillin i got another idea,, i liked his idea but then i said it will hold the cab but what will hold the container.. what i need is about 4 wood dish type pieces i dont have a router or i would try it myself but what im thinking is take a 2x4 and cut it down to 2x3 laying flat not standing on its edge and routing out a dish in it about 1/2 inch deep leaving about an 1/8 lip all the way around the outside of it to hold in the water,, so i can lock it in the vise i use on my drill press the vise only opens to alittle over 2 inchs so they have to be no more then 2 inchs wide and about 3 inches long---- i would be more then happy to pay for your work and the wood ---- so if anyone would like to help me out give me a yell,, --- heres a pic of the vise this little sucker weighs 6 lb so it stays where you put it hahaha

John, am I understanding correctly? You want to make a wooden bowl like thing that will hold water?
Sounds like a good idea, but the wood would probably soak up the water and eventually swell, warp, and then split (even if you varnish it). I think you'd have better luck with a PVC or Corian type material.

what ya think if i coat it with fiberglass resin i have a gallon of it at the shore house i used on my other boat that would prob water proof it ,, its prob gonna have less then a shot glass of water in it each time and it wont sit in there when im done drillin it would get dumped out

Sands, what about a piece of PVC sewer pipe, specifically an end cap? Might stand up better than wood against dings, chips, and cracking? It can also be cut down to shape very easily. Sounds like a great project. I hope it works out real well.

doc the reason i was thinking wood was it can be shaped easy to fit in the vise cause it will only open alittle over two inchs and its cheap cause i need around 4 or 5 this way i can let the silicon set over nite and do a few cabs at one time

What about, like babyfood jar lids? Too flimsey? I thought the pvc cap was a good idea, A smaller size cap, one cab per dish? Make a bunch of popscycle stick boxes, and coat them with fiberglass. I can't really see you doing it, but its an idea.

im sittin here thinkin that the bigger inspection caps have that 1/2 or 3/4 plastic nut moulded in the lid to screw it on and off i could allways lock that nut in the vise to hold it tight --- i think that might work even better thanks guys for gettin my mind outta park hahaha i been sittin in this chair toooooo long

I would take some rubber and glue it to the sides of your vise that way you could clamp down on the rock

Sands, that is about what I had in mind. At the price, and the absence of fabrication on the caps, you might get a few done.
