Very pleased with how this second glass batch turned out which adds confidence for future glass tumbles. Most of the clear stuff was a green vase but the paint/coating disappeared pretty quick in the tumbler. Middle left darker brown is from a beer bottle, middle right blue are more of the same from my December Batch. Middle right real dark brown is from a big chunk of slag glass my neighbor, he let me break off a piece. I'm going to give (bribe) him a couple in the hopes he'll give the whole chunk. Bottom right blue is my fave in this batch and is from thrift store dinner plates. Middle pieces I drilled holes in prior to tumbling to see how they would turn out and they look good never mind where the holes are:). Every thing else is from vases and cookware purchased at thrift stores or donated by friends/family. About half the colored glass I've got so far is coated/painted which isn't obvious (to my rookie eyes) till I cut it with the tile saw and see the color chipping off. I figured out if the bottom is clear then good chance it's painted/coated, also I check bottom contact area for signs of wear and chipping indicating it's painted/coated. The challenge now is to get colored glass that's not coated/painted so if anybody's got tips on all that I'm all ears!
Every batch I learn something new...this time I tried Rockindad's idea of using plastic sheeting to better seal my UV10 vibe lid to bowl in an effort to eliminate minor leakage I had in previous batches. It worked good, no leakage and an unexpected bonus... I didn't have to add water in stages 2 and 3 and much less than previous in stage 4. I always thought adding water was a given without really thinking why but this caused me to think more about the lid to bowl seal (or lack of). The lid seal surface is soft rubber so it should seal good but the bowl contact surface has a rough serrated-like finish (from however it was cut) so an air leak overall. There is likely some minor air leakage through the bowl and lid hardware also. I may be out to lunch on this part but I'm thinking the tumbling action may act as an air pump somewhat? Anyways, less mess and less babysitting so I'll be using the plastic sheeting in future tumbles for sure...thank you Rockindad ! And Thumler if you're listening, do your customers a favor and machine the bowl contact surface better, overall it's a good machine in my opinion but this will make it better!
