Just a few pieces that I just took out of polish. Finally got some of my local hematite done but can't get a really nice picture of it. It's just the prettiest gun metal gray and what a shine. Also a few pieces of amethyst and FINALLY my teardrop is done. And then there's this tiny little thing, just a bit smaller than a dime but look at those green bands, I think it's peridot but not sure, could be oviline (sp). It's just pretty! Thanks for looking, have to retake the pics of the others. Cher

Yep, those are beauties. I can see that shine! Just a super job, on a very messey rock. Great going!

Hey Tinman, It's just a few small pieces that I picked up and tossed in the barrel. I live on the Iron Range in Minnesota, we grow that stuff wild around here.
Thanks KD and Mike ... you know, it's not bad if you only put a couple of pieces in at a time and they really polish nicely, even with quartz and agates. When you have just a few in the load, it gives a slight reddish tinge to the slurry but not the rust red staining kind. I just haven't wanted to deal with a whole load like that but these turned out so darn nice I might just have to give it a go.

Cher-
That hematite is really cool, good job. Do you have picts of it in it's natural state? I'd like to see what they look like. So do you pick them off the trees, or do they grow on vines?
Nice green goblin rock too. It ain't red, but I'll bet you're proud of that little guy anyway, right?
Take care,

What polish did you use on the hematite? I will be doing some hematite soon and want to use the right polish, I know alot of people that love hematite. Tami

LOL Gaetz ... picked 'em right off the old hematite tree ... I think I might have a few of the small pieces left, I'll take a look tomorrow and take pics if I do. I know I have one bigger piece that I left sitting outside the garage all winter, it's totally rusted, nice bright orange.
Kim, I used aluminum oxide polish on them. Don't use Cerium, I had these in polish quite awhile ago, ran them for a few days in AO and they had a pretty good shine. I'd been running my loads in AO for about a week then putting them in Cerium for another week. It worked great on the harder rocks like quartz and agate but the Cerium totally ruined what shine I had on them.

tami asked it but i was thinking it too lol. i'm only willing to risk one barrel after all that y'all have said about it. i got my ceramic media to use as filler. what's the moh on the hematite? i'm kind of scared of trying this but i'd rather put some in a barrel and see what happens than to stick it in my saw.
really nice stones there cher. what is the pink teardrop? rose quartz?

Gheeezzz I'm sorry Tami ... guess maybe it is bedtime.
Yes Kim, that's the rose quartz that I shaped with my dremel several months ago. The list I have says that hematite is 5.5 - 6.5 MOHS but like I said, I put it in with all the other stuff, agate, quartz. It's either do a load completely by itself or don't put more than a few pieces in with other stuff. Otherwise it gets too red and that's when you can stain the other rocks.

Very nice Cher I've got some hematite but have put off doing any of it because of the mess... I might pop a piece or two into my next load! The teardrop came out lovely !

I got a batch of hematite going now, started out with about 2 lbs and now have about maybe 1lb. It's very soft around 6-6.5, and it's brittle. The red mess it makes is quite substantial BUT it is well worth it when those babys come out of final polish, they look like mercury! I am using AO for my final polish and have done so with hematite before with outstanding results. A little hint, you may want to grind down the sharp edges and pits on the hematite before you course tumble them, better yet use cut them with a rock saw into cubes, they polish great but you can see every tiny little pit and flaw with your end result. Tumble hematite alone for best results. Marian

Definitely a wrap ... in sterling silver. Just waiting for the inspiration to knock me in the head. Hopefully looking at Banjo's gorgeous stuff will do that. ;D
