Hello. While at Quartzsite last month I picked up two pieces of Prystine Magnesite. It's pure white. I've read that they dye this stone to make fake turquoise. My question is, will cutting this in my slab saw cause discoloration from the oil? I want it to remain pure white. My trim saw which uses water is not big enough to slab this. I haven't found much information on this material. Anyone work with this?
Thanks for reading.

Try using pure clear mineral oil in the saw. Then ASAP get the rocks out and wash in soapy water.

Magnesite is relatively soft. If it can absorb color enough to pass as imitation turquoise it will probably be able to discolor from whatever is in the oil. As the previous reply mentioned, clean clear mineral oil would be your best bet, but if you can't do that, I've had luck getting oil staining out of some slabs by soaking them in concentrated Simple Green for a couple of days to a week.

Thanks RMF and herb. I will probably just end up cutting one of them in the slab saw and see what happens. I'm not ready to change oil yet so I'll also keep the Simple Green in mind to try to cut any oil staining out if that's the direction I go with.

I'm not familiar with the material but if it's slightly porous, soaking it in water for a week or so before slabbing will help prevent oil from penetrating into the stone. It works with white howlite.
