I need some help here. Details: Was asked to make a rock box for someone who has early stage Dementia. Her and her husband were rock lovers. Traveled the USA collecting rocks. He cut some and made jewelry from them. She has now become obsessed with the few remaining rocks she still has. Spends hours holding them. Is becoming frustrated when she cannot remember the names of certain rocks/fossils. Most of their collection was stolen during her Husband’s funeral, many years ago. The box I was asked to use is 13.5” wide by 10” by 5.5” deep. The request is for me to take photos of some rock slabs I have that are similar to the slabs/cabs/rough rocks she has. Taking photos of her specific pieces is not an option, as she is very protective of her remaining items. Is afraid someone is going to take them. Place the photos in the top of the box. I would include wording to indicate the specific rock/fossil on each photo. Under the top, another sheet would be attached showing a photo and wording for each type of rock/fossil within the below compartments. I want to help this person not become frustrated while looking through her rocks. She knows she has Dementia. Am using all of my past experience in working with those who have Dementia for this project. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Do you think I am going the correct route for this? Thank you

Something only “similar” may confuse her more.
Take the pictures while she holds them, then label.

I’m not as experienced with it as you, but “reality” can change in an instant with dementia. I wouldn’t spend as much time trying to match the type of rocks she lost. But give her variety, smoothness, and color. Most find great comfort in a lifelike doll of some type. Maybe these rocks will connect her to her past. Best wishes and hope you are rewarded for your generosity.

That's a very thoughtful thing to do for her! Dementia is tough, and no knowing which part of cognition will be affected. I'd suggest nothing polished that is small and might eventually get confused with candy/food. You can also use a paint pen to write the name of the rock directly onto the slab, so that it is easy for her to put back into the correct compartment as things advance.
