Hello! My name is MrHomeScientist. I run a fairly successful YouTube channel, with around 50k subscribers - MrHomeScientist. It's a science-themed (primarily chemistry) channel, but I've branched out a bit lately to different topics. I have a very wide range of hobbies, including chemistry, metalcasting, rockhounding, gold panning, and now lapidary. I'm just getting started with this hobby and haven't made any finished pieces yet. I'll post about my two current projects later on. My primary interest is in slabbing and making cabochons, but I'm also doing a bit of tumbling right now too. Equipment: 10" Hi-Tech slab saw, 8" All-U-Need flat lap, and a small 3lb rock tumbler. So far I've slabbed a few pieces of rough, made some rough cabochon shapes, and have started on the 2nd wheel on the flat lap (the brown one, 325 grit). I'm having some difficulty here, probably due to poor technique, but I'll make a separate post about that. I found this forum searching for lapidary advice, and you guys seem very experienced and knowledgeable. I hope I can contribute something of value eventually!

Welcome!
You have some good equipment there to get started with. Robin and I both have the same flat lap. I got one after seeing how good hers was.

Barium?
Well, yes, if you're unsuccessful. First you try to helium, then you try to curium, but if this fails then you have to barium.

Welcome! Probably my favorite "you know you're a chemist if..." is: A chemist is someone who washes their hands before going to the bathroom. (presume after as well)
