Has anyone ever tried using hydroton (plans clay pebbles) in the rock tumbler? I was thinking about trying it, it has a hardness of 7 on the mohs scale, but I was hoping to see if anyone has tried it before?

I had to look them up and all I can say is you would probably want to have dedicated batches for each grit stage since their porous nature would lead them to trap grit. They don't look expensive, it may be worth running a batch of plentiful native rocks and see how they pan out.
