Quick question to all those slabbers out there... I've been looking into getting a slabbing saw, but the price tag on them is my main detractor... I had pondered trying to create a water-cycling miter saw, but the idea of electrocuting myself kept me from trying it... I was wondering if a 10" Tile saw would work for slabbing large pieces of rocks... rocks roughly 6-8" in height... My main worry is the height of the rocks, and them not fitting under the sawblade... Was just wondering if anyone else out there has been using a tile saw, and any recommendations on the type to get... I saw one on Ebay for 199.99, blade, waterpump and stand included... and I wanted to jump on it, if it'll work.
Thanks again everyone...

do you have a link so we can see the machine? I think it would work but you may want to use a lapidary blade as most tile blades have a wider blade, but that isn't a real issue until you start cutting "expensive" rock that you don't want to waste any

Hi all, Hi Billy, Llana and I use a 7" wet tile saw with a diamond blade for cutting our rocks. Llana found a 10" tile saw that she's planning to look at tomorrow. If it works as well as our 7", we'll be happy! Seems to me that if the saw will accept diamond blades and has a coolant reservoir, it should cut rocks! Hate to break this to you, though. 10" saws are only supposed to be able to cut something like 3 1/2" rocks. Somebody out there that knows more about this than I do, please correct me if I'm wrong.

your right BE a 10 inch blade will cut around 4-1/2 inch rock--what ever the blade size it will cut alittle less then half its size

I have also been cruising eBay for tile saws and was just getting ready to post basically the same question Billy did. I think this saw might be the one he was looking at. I have been looking it is also and comparing it with the MK100. Have also seen a couple others very similar to this one that are affordable. If something like this will work, I'll be havin' myself a 10" tile saw! Soon! Either the one I am going to look at tomorrow or one of these I have been looking at o eBay. cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=46588&item=4317437896

We've found the same thing. The 7" wet tile saw that we purchased can only cut rocks that are about 2" tall. So I guess if a person wanted to cut 6-8" rocks they would need a 12-14" tile saw.
Llana, where did you guys get your blades for your 7"? We recently purchased some but had to buy a 6" blade because we couldn't find a 7".

That link is pretty much the saw I was looking at... If it works, i'm all for it... Since paying $700 isn't feasible right now... the 200 is a much better deal. Thanks everyone for your help.

We just put a new blade on ours today. It's the first notched blade we have used. Got it at McCoy's. Can't remember the name - Power Diamond or Diamond Power - something like that. Like it so far.
We also got one for $19.95 from ebay. We weren't pleased with it, but have since decided that we probably could have gotten more life out of it if we hadn't put it on backwards and if we had used enough cool tool. We did turn it around!
The other blades we have used are the ones that Sandsman sent us with the saw.
We think we have not been using enough coolant and probably have more life in the blades we have replaced. We still have all of them and I guess one day we will put them back on and see what happens.
When I went searching for a blade, I just googled "7" diamond saw blades" and went from there. I quite a few places that have 7" blades. They are diamond tile saw blades though, not lapidary blades. the one we got fro eBay was a lapidary blade - or at least the seller said it was.

Hey Billy, I use a MK100 tile saw, which is a 10 incher. The rule of thumb is, you can cut using 1/3 the diameter of the blade. My saw will cut 3.75 inches. This means that I can cut a rock 7.5 iches in diameter if I cut it from both sides. I paid $540 for mine, but it came with a whole assortment of accesories including a stand and two diamond blades.

Hey Llana, if your old blades still have diamond in them, you can bring them back to life by cutting up an old grinding wheel. This will eat away the steel exposing more diamond.

ps. Did it ever stop raining there?

An old grinding wheel. Hmmm. we'll have to remember that. Of course, since we don't have a grinder yet, we don't have an old grinding wheel! But, I won a grinder last night on eBay, so we will have old grinding wheels in the future! Yes, it did finally stop raining - at least in flood porportions. We have been getting a good rain about every week to 10 days. That is really nice because here we are almost the middle of August and everything is green. Usually this time of year everything is brown and we are at high fire alert. llana
