I have been working on a project using glass from jamesp. I started off by making 4 cabs the normal way using the genie all the way through the polish stage. To speed things up and to eliminate scratch possibilities I did a run of 5 cabs using the genie to get the cabs domed through the 280 wheel and then I ran them through all the tumbling steps in the loto. For a third type I ground one piece into a circle on a 220 wheel and then just ground a slight 45 on the edges and tossed that right into the tumbler. No dome on that one. Here are the 4 that were fully cabbed on the genie These 5 were partially cabbed on the genie then tumbled And this one was simply edge ground to the circle shape then tumbled (no dome) It has been a fun project. Thanks for Looking Chuck

Those are some wild patterns! Did you find you had a preference on the method used to finish glass? Lot-O finish vs cabbed. Is there much difference?

They all look really good, Chuck. I can see the difference between the 3 techniques -- totally hand cabbed have the roundest dome, the second batch is a little less and the last even less. For inexpensive groove wraps, I'm thinking just grinding down to the shape is the way to go.
Did you pre-grind the grooves on them before you popped them in the Lot-O?

Love em, great work. I know you have a jihad about the bubbles being a perfectionist. Nothing to do with your workmanship !

If I were wanting to make 10 or more of these the advantage shifts to tumbling. If I only wanted a couple the advantage goes to hand cabbing. Chuck

All rounding was done in the Lot-O? That’s pretty impressive.

All rounding was done in the Lot-O? That’s pretty impressive. Not sure which one your asking about. The middle ones were domed on the genie then tossed in the lot-o. The last one was just edge shaped to the circle template and the rest all lot-o. Maybe this helps. This was some of them getting ready to go in the lot-o Chuck

Did you pre-grind the grooves on them before you popped them in the Lot-O? I did pre-grind witness grooves. Basically just cut in a bit knowing the depth would change after tumbling. The witness groove gives me a guide for cabbing the dome. One of the cabs got a bunch of damage to the groove during tumbling. No rhyme or reason why it happened to one particular cab. I was able to repair that one on the genie though. chuck

In person they are not nearly as noticeable as the camera shows either. Chuck
