Hi, I bought a 20 pound box of mixed rock off ebay and now I'm trying to figure out what I have. Some of it is obvious, like leopard skin jasper and crazy lace, but some of it I'm either not sure about, or am totally clueless about. I think these are mostly from the southern US and Mexico, although I think there is some Brazilian agate too. Here are some pics, anyone know what these are? I have no clue about this one...seems to be about Mohs 7 though. I think the one below is probably Brazilian agate... but I could be wrong. I think this is maybe some kind of agate?? This one I photographed dry because the colours get kind of similar when wet so much of this pattern disappears. I got a bunch of stuff like this, which seems to be some kind of agate... bluish, with some red and yellow patterning. Is this some specific kind of agate? I don't think it's Brazilian because I don't see any real banding. Thanks.

No help at all but dang you sure got a lot of gorgeous stuff from that buy. The blue stuff is stunning, can't wait to see it polished.

I think you are right on the brazilian agate. I think the one below is fancy brazilian jasper. Just my 2 cents worth...LOL! Those are the only two I think I know.

The first one looks like Wyoming Dendritic Agate, It is usually a mustard yellow with dendrites. Alice is as close as I would come to the rest of those. I am wondering about the skin on the last ones you are holding. They could be 'Thunder eggs' I've seen them as big a bowling balls and when they are broken, it is hard to tell they were ever part of a sphere. But they most definately come in blue.

Thanks for the replies. I'll do some followup searching on those ideas, but they certainly sound much better than anything I could come up with. Alice, that one in the 4th pic might be lace agate, but I think it is something different. There was some lace agate in the box too, and it seems much more swirly patterned. There are some swirls on the bottom of the 4th pic though, so maybe you are right. Banjo, you asked about the rind on the blue agate, so I'll include a pic below. There were 6 pieces of this agate, and only 3 had any rind. The rind is thin, brown, and is capped in two small areas with something that looks like gypsum or calcite. The rind looks almost like pet.wood, especially in the top rock in the pic, though I realize that is very unlikely. The thunder egg idea hadn't even crossed my mind. Still sound reasonable based on the rind? There were also a couple small agates that were blue inside. I think these are different than the pic above, because the rind is very black. Same kind of rind as on the very first pic, the one I think is Brazilian agate. Here's a pic.
