Hi All , I have had a very fortunate week so far. I went to see one of the rockhound club members on monday and we had a great time together. I gave hime a small slab of Chert I had found on a beach. He gave me 5,5 pound of agates that were lying in his garden . He got them from someone else. Next day I went to see my friend Charlie Powell after he rang me up for some :"Pro-polish" that he wanted to try out in his vibratory tumbler to compare it with tin-oxide. Pro-polish has tin-oxide as it's base I have learned a few weeks ago. Charlie is going to have a few busloads of people coming throgh his display area and workshop on may 22. he asked me to set up one of my Lortone tumblers and my flatlap. Sure no problem haha. Then when it was time to go home he asked me to take an old vibratory tumbler as a thank you . WOW , I was blown away by this gesture. This morning I set it going and it seems to work smooth as !! The model is :" 101b electric vibrator tumbler". I had never seen one up close like this and I feel very priviliged to have received it. The bowls hold 5 pound of rocks and I put 5 pound of agates in one bowl and a mixture of agates and Grossular garnets in the other one. 2 teaspoons of grit and 2 teaspoons of water ( which was called a dessertspoon). I found on the internet how much that actualy was haha. here are a few pics of this great gift . enjoy Jack

What an interesting set up. Does the top have lids, or do you just fill it and turn it loose? Never seen anything like that. Congrats! cookie

Yeah Jack, kewl beans!!!! I have found, lapidary, has some of the most decent people I have met. When a person shows an interest, they go out of their way to help out and share the joy. I bet you will be there one day also. It is a privilege.

Kim , each stage takes 6 to 8 hours. Grit will have broken down by then and stones need to be washed and inspected. Ready ones move to next stage and others return to bowl. The bowls are being held in place by a metal strap and 2 wing nuts.
The bowls are made of iron with a plastic outer coat. The polishing bowls also have a plastic inner coat.
Cookie, no there are no lids and I found 2 stones out of the bowl when I checked after lunch. I may have too many big ones in the agate load and not enough smalls haha.It needs frequent little squirts of water. Charlie has made a box over his one with fibreglass padding to dampen the noise.
Docone31, yes , there are many nice people in this hobby and I am so pleased I am part of it. I already share with others any knowledge I have and give rocks away just for the fun of it. Just this afternoon , I got paid for the last 22 cows( that I owned) I sold to another farmer. Now I am cowless...hmm sad feeling that ...makes me think I am getting old haha The other cows were sold 4 years ago to 2 of my sons who work the farm now. I showed this farmer lady through my workshop and she was hugely interested. Sure , I gave her a nice piece of polished granite that I had intended for book end , but it was a bit too small haha. Cher, well , you must have seen plenty of my polished garnets ( the grossular type) in the past as I had shown a whole dishful some time ago . They were astonishing. But I will post pics once ready !!
Thanks for all your replies.

Well Jack- I have never seen anything like that before! Ya learn something new everyday with this stuff. It is amazing. I have to agree, it seems really nice people are those who work with the natural elements of the earth. Stones, for example! What an extraordinary gift!

Hi Banjo , I am pleased you like my new outfit haha. makes me feel unique :-)
Hey Sandsman , I think you are right...I had a feeling that I should be using my big tumblers to round the rough and use the vibrator for the other stages. But I wasn't sure of it since it is the very first time I use a vibe. By not using coarse grit in the vibe , those iron barrels should last many more years yet. I have them going for the third day now , 8 hours each day. The grossular garnets shape up a bit faster than the hard agates.
Thanks for your advise. I have just glued a new lining in my 16 pound steel barrel so in a few days I can use that one again for coarse grit.
