my older brother as asked me where he might find very large rock, ideally it would be a dark stone about 8 feet long with enough mass to still be a structurally sound column after polishing. i have no idea where he would find stones that big. can any one help?

I think he is hoping to not have to mine it himself. all he has told me is it's related to a German art installation from the last century called 7000 Oaks

I'm thinking landscaping companies that are in the business of placing large boulders around homes and businesses.

That is a thing i had not thought of and fits with his goal of placing a large stone in his yard as a meaningless obstacle to mow around statement about art (or some such esoteric justification)

Depends on what you are looking for, is there a granite quarry near you that produces large slabs like you describe? You might check with a local stone carver or monument company. They would have access to large rocks that can be polished.

Granite or Marble quarry. Though they tend to be lighter. How much shine is he expecting? You could probably get Basalt.

Basalt, as it turns out, is the preferred material and he wants it to have a relatively rough finish. there is a granite dealer near our parents house, i suggested he could laminate the piece he wanted thereby making it significantly lighter
