I placed the polished end of this small piece of Eden valley Petrified wood in bleach for two days. Not as good a result as I was hoping but it did get better. Maybe longer would help.

Does plain old bleach work the best? What about peroxide?

Does plain old bleach work the best? What about peroxide? plain old bleach right out of the jug, give it shot and show us your results. I only submerge the face I want bleached.

I might need to try this with some pet wood I have. It does not work on all types of petrified wood, but give it a try and see what you get. before and after photo's are a must!

I am considering this piece of Brilliant from AL. What are you considering doing with it? I think I would take cut off of the end and see what the inside looks like. I only bleach cut and polished faces not whole speciums. I don't what you would get if you bleached tehw hole thing, might be good might be bad.

I think I would take cut off of the end and see what the inside looks like. Yeah, the Brilliant Wood crystals are smoky quartz to one degree or another. I don't think those would bleach, though bleach might make them stand out more. Wouldn't try it on the whole thing - your suggestion to do a cut off one end is good - might experiment on the cut-off first to see what it'll do. Definitely a bad idea to bleach if those smoky quartz xtls turn white (smoky quartz is one of the reasons Brilliant Wood is so collectible, IMO). The Alabama wood I've had has been rather porous and/or fragile, so never even tried to polish. Some pieces have a rusty yellow cast, and perhaps one day I'll try to see if that can be bleached out. Oxalic acid might b better for that, as I suspect it is iron causing the yellow. Wonder if the hoarders have taken all the bleach off the shelves at the stores?

I was thinking of placing the end in bleach. Do not have my saw set up yet. Waiting for warm weather to do that. There does appear to be some rust stains on the end.
