These were supposed to be part of the kitchen back splash in my custom built home. When I purchased them they were called Travertine, which I did not agree with. The reddish ones are about a 7 hardness. The lighter ones about a 6. I have about 6 of the longer sections. Used some for a rock related inlay next to the back deck door. I insisted on bringing everything I had for the back splash to my new home. I have about 12 pieces of 12" by 12", 1" tiles of the lighter ones. Some others that are similar to what is pictured, but with a sunburst pattern. Same material. First question is what do you think they are? Second one is if they are worth further shaping and either tumbling or cabbing? I think the reddish ones could produce some nice cabs. The lighter ones could be tumbled and used for wind chimes (maybe) or children's give aways at shows. Opinions?

Make a big chess or checker board. Home Depot carries travertine tile. Go there and compare.

fernwood I would say it’s not travertine based on the hardness you described. It looks metamorphic to me. Maybe marble. It looks very nice!
