Yea grams is probably the finest resolution you can hope for on a basic kitchen scale. No sense really in going finer than that (10ths, 100ths, etc). It is a rock after all and not analytical chemistry. Extra digits cost extra money.
Conversions not terrible either: 453.6 g/lb 2.2 lb/kg Pick your poison.

Side note. Great gas blow out prevention. These are 8" I.D. pipe barrels with 6" Fernco caps. Before clamping down I press down with my weight with elbow on center of cap to squeeze air out and create a vacuum. Then tighten band clamp. See depression in 7 qt. barrel. The 9 qt. has a slight positive pressure. In a high gas situation the 6" Fernco can bloat to almost a hemisphere under pressure. When bloated be cautious loosening the band clamp because the gas pressure sends it well away. Like loosen it under a blanket.

Followed your lead on the units Benathema. Easy to interpret numbers using metric.

There was a discussion about counting rpm. Make 15 second video and count rotations/minute, multipy by 4. Or 10 second video and multiply by 6.
vid cam sound sensitive
15 second video. Small barrel in front is UGLY at 34 rpm
10 second video. Ugly on fast shafts on left at 73 rpm.

Left wallowed bearing serves as dynamic torque indicator(shaft climbing left side of bearing hole). Lame, been like that for several years.

Curious, why AO 200 after the SiC 500?

Curious, why AO 200 after the SiC 500? SiC is a sharp aggressive abrasive for cutting, AO is a smoother abrasive for polishes and smooth finishes Joshua. I will try to get an accurate weight before/after SiC 500 run and an accurate weight before/after AO 200 run and compare weight loss. SiC should be larger loss.

This will be the vibe to do the SiC 500-AO 200-AO polish steps. Will run UGLY in 100% pea gravel in one side and the smalls with pea gravel in other. The belly is 6 inch pipe to give idea of size. Rock size limited by opening at top.

I was just wondering why not a finer grade of AO, is it because of how it breaks down, you just don't need one?

I was just wondering why not a finer grade of AO, is it because of how it breaks down, you just don't need one? AO 500 is the next finer aluminum oxide I have. It was simply not 'aggressive' enough to remove the scratches left by the SiC 500. I started with AO 80 (in the vibe). It smoothed the SiC 500 finish in 4 to 5 days Moved to AO 200(in the vibe). It smoothed the SiC 500 finish in 2 to 3 days. So the AO 220(200). AO is a weird bird when used in the vibe. Bigger AO 22 and AO 46 polishes beautifully in the vibe if left in the vibe long enough. But it is faster to do steps, say AO 22, then AO 80, then AO polish(all in the vibe) than doing a one step with AO 22 or 46. Fine polishes using only AO 22 with sugar in the vibe. The last photo is AO 22 sitting on paper with 1/4" lines to get an idea of AO 22 particle size: www.flickr.com/photos/67205364@N06/sets/721576811393065251/2 pounder Rio rare purple moss with AO 22 polish.

That answers the question, I think. Nice Rio purple moss. I love that shine, it looks wet and glassy.

Just carefully seperated SiC coarse abrasive from the UGLY run after 24 hours at 26 rpm and 24 hours at 74 rpm.
Stunned to find 1 cup of SiC 10 and 1/2 cup SiC 60 reduced to a few tablespoons.
Next step is to weigh the small rocks and UGLY to see if such a fast reduction in abrasives reflects a fast reduction in rock weight. Doubting it.
Will inspect surface for nicks and the deadly half moons. Check thin test rocks for breaks.
Regardless of above findings, the barrel will be moved to the 26 rpm shafts due to the chance of bruises with UGLY at a ripping 74 rpm.

Pure white cobbles with moss markings and smooth surface is a dead ringer for a fine Rio moss with clear chalcedony fill, yummy rock. Such moss comes in red green blue pink orange peach burgundy purple yellow and a mix thereof. Many mosses are under 2 inch cobbles. The smaller ones are usually the least fractured. And then you have to know the patina of about 1000 other jaspers, woods, palms, cherts, bandeds, Montana-likes, etc.

Why Sir are you tumbling again? He he, mental health. Been tumbling, just not rocks Ali. Glass. Time for a change ! Got a pile of bigger Rio's to play with. (George's). You have mastered cabbing, congrats. Impressive work. I should take a photo of those Rio's, I paved the side of the greenhouse with them. Do you go on collecting trips to any of the Great Lakes ? Aren't you close to one of them.

Thank you jamesp this will be fun. Benathema motivated me to do some large rocks. This time I want to try stuff, take better trend numbers like Ben did. Ben tumbled that large white quartz. Never thought he could(sorry Ben) because it is fickle about bruising. Plus I collected bigguns with intent to tumble.

Can't wait to see how this one turns out (in 20 weeks). You have a way with large rocks. Although, I am surprised to see that you didn't take a tuck-point blade to the rough square edges right off. Nice batch there!
