Can't tell you what it is, but it's definitely not porcelain jasper.

Tempskya, Tree Fern root, maybe Going to be difficult to tie it to a species like Tempskya from a piece that small, but fern root is what I immediately thought, too.

This is the brecciated porcelain jasper I was reminded of. This material was from El JeffA ETA I can plainly see the difference now.

knave Is this material from WI? If so it looks like silicified Bryozoa. I have seen fossils Bryozoans trapped in Chert (ocean bottom) formation from WI.

It came in a box of slabs and end cuts, so who knows?

That was my thought when I first saw it a couple days ago.
And we've got plenty palm root here in CA to know!

I had a super nice slab of it a few years ago. Haven't seen one that nice since, or it would be mine- all mine.
Forget where in CA. I want to say Mojave, but I'm not sure.

Safe to say it’s a root of some kind. If she sells it, how should we label it? (Ethically)

rockjunquie I love the sad little creature (upper left) in your cab. Maybe he/she is sad because their ears are missing.

Nice cab, Tela. I understand why you would want to keep it. Yes, Mojave is correct. There's some up by Yermo, I am told, and also near Kramer Junction. knave , I would ethically call it petrified palm root.

Yes...if you are in the SoCal Mojave area.......Here's an older link my wife & I used to explore that area January last year.....not a good time to comfortably hunt, but we plan on making it back there this spring in my truck rather than her Jeep SUV (not 4-wheel and to "pretty" to F up, her words).......The dirt roads are maintained, but I like to wander off in the vehicle to save time hiking and carrying 5lb buckets.
Our last visit didn't amount to much collection, wind was extreme and temp's down in the low 40's, we didn't prepare properly..........but my rocky buddy, I've mentioned before, has had some good palm finds there.......we are more into the agate hunting, but will take any fossil palm if in our search.

Found an old thread from Dec 2015 about Yermo palm fiber. The original poster's (paulshiroma) photos no longer show, but Mel Sabre52 added a few nice photos.
Here's Mel's post forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/post/842892
Here's just a couple of his photos Palm Root I'm sure I have some like this, would have to find it though. It is pretty distinctive looking. I'm sure I have some like this, would have to find it though. It is pretty distinctive looking.
Yermo Palm bog with roots
Here's a link to the entire thread Yermo Agatized Palm Fiber
Sadly, no other photos still linked there, but there is more info on finding it and how to identify it.
