I’m very happy with the 8V-1. It is definitely a production machine. A couple of the soft wheels are a little out of balance but it hasn’t affected my cabbing. The 8” wheels put a a lot of SFPM on the rocks. The water system keeps everything cool. I can go from a drip to totally drenching the rock.
i have ground some large, heavy corundum with it. It handles the task beautifully. It’s wide enough that two people can work on it at the same time. This thing is a beast. Well worth the money!
I’ll try to post pictures of my star sapphire collection soon. My source for Madagascar star sapphires continues to knock it out of the park.
Later.

From my research the 8” CabKing is a great machine but the wheels may be aren’t the strong point. But it appears to have great wheel spacing. Approximately what is the spacing between wheels?

knaveEdge to edge, the gap between the hard wheels is 2.5”. It’s 2” between the soft wheels. The water system is outstanding. I go through a lot of water but I think the cooling system far exceeds the Diamond Pacific bubbler.

To me the most desirable thing about the CK is it's price point. There are so many more good options for wheels now, when the ones with the machine wear out, upgrade. I prefer the Genie style cooling system, but as long as either choice works, it's not a big deal.

The machine came with two complete sets of soft wheels. The hard wheels will get replaced with sintered wheels when they are worn. I’m pretty good about using the entire width of the wheels so I don’t expect the hard wheels to wear out anytime soon.

I have the 8 and am newby to this. What would be your replacement wheels of choice. I only have had it running for 6 months and use it every few weeks. Prob a newby thing but the soft wheels seem to have almost a buildup in middle. Waxy look and feel. Ex: The black 280 takes forever to remove the scratch so I used the sides more and noticed it removed twice as fast. Again prob nweby using middle to much but you see I havent used it long.

knave Yes it does. I’m still on my first set. They seem to be pretty durable. textriguyit takes a while to learn to work the full width of the wheel. It sounds like you already know. I really try to focus on using the entire wheel, both hard and soft.

knaveEvan, I have two 6” lortone arbors. One has 80 grit and 400 grit hard wheels. The other is set up with 400 and 600 grit expando wheels. They were my go to cabbers for decades. The CabKing 8V-1 has made them obsolete. I do still like my 400 grit hard wheel though. I’m thinking of getting some finer hard wheels to put on the Lortones. The CabKing is big and it has a pretty large footprint. It is still the best lapidary purchase I have made. Two people can work on it simultaneously and never touch each other. I haven’t had any regrets about buying it. The water system is amazing with two adjustable jets per wheel. It’s $1,000 cheaper than the Titan and I feel the cooling system is superior. I’m not sure if the wheels are as good as the Titan, but wheels wear out and need to be replaced anyway. Break-in on the CabKing wheels took me a while. There were a couple big diamonds on both of the hard wheels. They are gone now and the machine works flawlessly. I have been grinding some large star sapphire crystals. The Lortones just don’t work on these larger stones. If you are thinking about one, I can’t think of anything negative to say about mine. I guess just the break-in on the hard wheels. I got in a hurry and ended up chipping a couple of nice cabs. Not an issue now. Let me know if you have any other questions. Later, Brent.
