Last summer I found a rock in the river that looked kind of like granite, except it had black lines running through it and it seemed a bit softer (mohs 6) than what I expect for granite. I posted some pics last winter to see if I could get help with an ID. The replies seemed to generally lean toward granite, with Michiganrocks making a very good case for syenite. Some people said rhodonite, but it's much too red for that. At any rate, I've since busted and tumbled it, and here's what I got. This is the rough rock before cracking it up: And here's a couple of pics of it tumbled. Thanks for looking!

Man, nice job on that! It was a whole lot tighter than I would have imagined. That's got a very nice shine to it. But, I still couldn't tell you what it is. You sure made it sparkle though!

Still going with granite, I find a lot of that stuff up here, with the same kind of lines. Takes a beautiful polish, that looks really nice.

I don't know what it is but I have my doubta about it being granite. What type of polish did you use?
In any case you did a fantastic job polishing it !It's very hrd to get a shine like that on a material that is so pitted. You did a great job not letting the pits get full of slurry and polish too!!It aint easy to do that!!
Thanks,,,,,

We have the same types of rocks here in the river. Never polished them up though... haven't got enough yet. My son brings one or 2 small ones home from his bus stop every day. I think by the end of the summer I'll have a barrel full.

Looks like an "India Red Granite" tombstone I saw the other day. It did not have the black lines, though.

Yes , I too think it is granite. you got a good shine on it. I often find that granite gets damaged on the edges through which they don't take a shine whereas the flat sides do ok.
Thanks for showing

If it was harder that the granite you have had in the past perhaps it is marble. It looks like some of the head stones I saw at the cemetary Saturday. Tami
