TKW, The only difference between rubies and sapphires is the color. If they are red, they are rubies. Everything else is a sapphire. I have found that emeralds are much softer than corundum (sapphires and rubies) they are Beryl. On the hardness scale more like agate. It looks like you have some nice emeralds in this batch. Check the MOHS scale and run them with with stones of the same hardness and you will turn out some beautiful pieces! mineral.galleries.com/minerals/hardness.htmThere is a better example of the scale, I'm sure someone here can point it out. Good Luckj! cookie

I know what you mean, I am really trying to find a good price on a dual tumbler on e-bay. Just a little trivia for you. A ruby is a red sapphire. Sapphire's come in many different colors I have found a purple all the way to clear. Tami

Oh, yes, I am going to have fun tumbling this. I guess I should have labeled the pictures of the stuff I got.
The bottom pic is petrified wood. The pic above it with 6 things in it is
green quartz green jasper moss agate jellybean jasper hickoryite brazilian agate
I photographed them wet so the color would show more.
Hopefully in about a month, I will have some finished pics of the green quartz.
On the emeralds and rubies, I know they are going to take some time. I guess since rubies are a 9, I will have to find some more rocks with a 9 whenever I am ready to get back to them. The guy I got them off of ebay said they were indian rubies so was surprised to see some of them were blue. Which is nice cause I wanted to have some sapphires too.

I can't find the other thread on emeralds, so am posting my emeralds and the sapphires I am tumbling for Claire/ These are my emeralds. These were the first stones I got to tumble, then lost interest in them when I started getting more rocks. Got re-interested when Debs, I think, started a new thread on emeralds and tossed them back in 60/90. I really have no idea how long they ran in 60/90 but this is what they look like. Started them in 220 yesterday. This next batch is the sapphires I am tumbling for the lady I met at Daves. Some nice BIG sapphires in there. For some reason, the color doesn't show very well in any of the pics I took, but they are really purple in real life. I threw sapphire gravel in as filler and it looks like I also have some rubies in there. The tans and browns is gravel I got from the driveway for more fill. These have a bit to go in 60/90. There's one or two in there that I would love to send to Doc for faceting, but they aren't mine. I am going to barter for a few of them rather than have her pay me though. llana

They look great! I got tired of mine when my CE Tumblers kept quitting on me. I threw a few of them into my large barrels I'll probably never find the pieces. The rest I will put back one of these days and finish. Just too many other rocks calling my name. Trish

Trish, when I threw mine back in 60/90 I just tossed them in with a bunch of other stuff. I had done them the first rounds by themselves and they didn't seem to be making much progress. When I tossed them in with other stuff, they moved alone much faster. They weren't really hard to find at all when it came time to sort them out. The green made them easy to see and since they are so small I had already taken out all the larger rocks.

Wow, your emeralds look a lot better than mine. Mine still need some more work. It might be awhile til I get back to mine, got green quartz and pet wood tumbling right now.
Did you mix your sapphires in with anything else? Or do they need to go by themselves? Thinking of looking for some more sapphires on ebay to make a full load.

My rubies are tumbling into week number 5. They have been coming along great! I just have a few bigger stones with some matrix left on and in between them. The others are all free from it and are shaping up. There are a couple of cool stones I've been keeping my eye on. One is bigger, kind of oblong shaped. But what is cool about it is that it is beveled all the way around naturally. The other was trapped inside an oblong matrix coating. Which is now free of it after 2 wks. It's interesting watching the progress of these stones and how the course grit effects them. I am going to let them tumble 9 wks and my jasper 7 wks. Which just happens to be their mohs number, just out of curiosity! How is everyone elses shapping up? Once these are done I will try my emeralds and sapphires.
