Hi I recently started tumbling...I have an old Sears Gem Tumbler that was running hot: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/91200/old-sears-rotary-tumbler-runningIt still seems a little hot; but it seems to be functioning. Anyway, that's not what I'm asking about here... I don't know what size barrel I have (see photos). It is 7 inches in "diameter" (it's actually a hexagon); and about 7 inches high. Some people size them by gallons, some by pounds... What do I have? How many tablespoons of the "stage one" grit should I put in? Thanks!!!

Whether you use gallons or pounds related to barrel size, you're really only concerned about volume. For instance, just because one might have a 6 lb barrel, that doesn't mean that you can only load up six pounds of material or having that be the final weight of the full barrel. No matter what you have, you'll want to fill it 2/3 - 3/4 full of rocks and media. As to your barrel size, I've got nothing here to compare it to, though my 6 lb barrels are roughly 5" x 8". If you want, tell me how much water it takes to fill your barrel (water only). I'll then check my barrels to see how the volume compares. Grit used in the coarse stage can range anywhere from 1 - 2 TBSP of grit for each pound of barrel capacity. Typically, I'm using about 1.5 TBSP/pound which puts me near 9 TBSP in a 6 lb barrel.

Those dimensions are really close to the barrel for my Lortone QT12 (12 pound barrel). I use a cup and a half of 46/70 sic (24 tbsp) for a 3/4 full barrel of rough. The grit is consumed after running for 1 week. I saw in your original thread someone mentioned that Thumler's made those for Sears. Check out the dimensions for Thumler's Model B on this page: rocktumbler.com/thumlers/model-b.shtmlIt looks like the barrel design hasn't changed much. The motor on my QT12 gets too hot to keep my hand on for more than about 10 - 15 seconds. Ambient temp is around 60F now. I haven't tried touching it in the summer when temps are in the 80's.
