Got a chance to hit the gravel pit yesterday between rain and found some good stuff. A couple of nice lakers, one is awesome!! I'm really into reds and found lots of jasper that really nicely banded and swirled. Can't wait to get my saw. Hope you don't mind all the pics. Thanks for looking, enjoy! Cher Nice clean piece of hematite ... saw material. I have no idea, maybe someone here might have a clue. It's kind of like grainy quartz if that makes sense. Very sparkly, even when it's dry. Picked this up for my friend in Alabama. It seems to be quartz, but very dark. Gonna whack it for him so might keep a piece for myself. (He's 81 so I like to send stuff he can throw right in the barrel.) Here's some of the jasper .... Yellow jasper, nice lines in this piece. Group pic of the Lake Superior agates. This was the nicest of the whole lot. Flip side ... awesome banding in it.

The red jasper and the agates have great colors in them.
Is that grainy quartz kind of a purple color with white in it? I have a piece of Lepidolite that looks real similar to your rock.

I wish I could find the lakers like I can find the jasper and hematite. I'd be paying for my rock hobby really fast then *smile*.

Cher-
Good job. If you can find that many Lakers in an hour, think what you could do on an entire Saturday? Thanks for sharing. I'd like to see a pic of the pit. I think Michigan posted a photo of the pit he was playing around in. It was neat to see.

Wow, wish I could find some solid hematite pieces,I find a lot of banded stuff with red Jasper. That's a great collection of Lakers in just such a short while. A friend gave me a load of Lakers last month, funny she told me most of them were collected in Minnesota (Can't remember the place at the moment, but somewhere Northwest of Duluth).

Hey Cher, nice bunch of rocks! Gotta love them Lakers. That one rock looks and sounds like it's probably Quartzite. Pure Quartz forms large crystals and chalcedony family including Agates is Quartz with no apparent crystal structure. But Quartzite is a rock forms from a mass of small, but visible, crystals. It is a Metamorpic rock that is often formed from metamorhized sandstone. I've never been very happy with any that I have tumbled. You won't get that glassy smooth surface that an Agate or Jasper gives you. No matter what I do, the surface always seems to appear to have tiny voids on the surface. I thought about polishing some and then treating them with Opticon to fill the voids, but I decided they weren't worth the bother as long as I've got better rocks waiting for me. When I work a new gravel pit, I'm always hoping to find a pocket of lakers, but no luck yet. Guess I'm just not far enough north yet but I can always hope. Probably not likely unless I can get up to the UP and do some looking. Ron

No white in it Tonya, just sparkles, it's kind of weird looking.
*smile* JK ... what's odd about finding rocks in a gravel pit?
Awww Gaetz, that would be true if all or even half of them were useable jewelry size but only the three on the left are. But still, I was extremely thrilled to find them, three an hour of that size is really exceptional. Generally lucky to find three in a full day of lakers that size and I've gone out many days and not found one that size. They are very elusive.
I thought about the idea of pics after I got in to the place. I'll see if I can remember to take a disposible camera with me next time I go. Don't want to carry my digital in, it's too big in the case and I need the room for more important stuff ... like rocks. *smile* Most of the time I have to walk in, was lucky to get to use a four wheeler that day.

Great find there, Cher! I really like that last one and the yellow jasper.
Ya' know, most people would think you are crazy for spending an hour at the gravel pit! But, to us, an hour at the gravel pit is a 10 on the scale of 1 to 10! Esp. when you can find rocks like that!
