here is my latest plate full out of the tumbler, a general mix of stuff including (finally) some of Banjo's famous Burro Creek Agate. tough stuff that! as you may notice, there are some preshaped brazilian agates in this batch that were some of my practice cabs on the grinder. i never finished the backs and wasn't sure if i wanted to dop them, so i chucked'em back into the tumbler into 600 grit for 10 days and then polish for another 10 days. now both sides are smooth and shiny! and here is a close up of a few trimming scraps that came out kinda neat.. Happy Memorial Day, folks, and thanks for looking! KD

Fantastic batch of stones, KD. And the shine is a blazin'! That Brazilian agate is fantastic. But do I only see a few pieces of crazy lace?? What?, are you finally running out?! ;D

I have a regular grinder can iI preform like that Tinman Tinman, Yes you can preform like that with a regular grinder, if you are willing to spend about 3 hours per stone Seriously, if you are talking about your standard bench grinder, which is great for sharpening tools and the like, I find mine is pretty much useless at even smoothing out minor rough spots on stones like agates. Takes forever, has no way to cool the stone so friction can heat things up and cause fractures, and the fine silica dust doesn't do your lungs any favours either. Maybe if you get a diamond wheel things might be okay, or maybe if you are grinding soft stones, but for the standard quartz hardness rocks, a typical bench-grinder is pretty much useless. just my opinion

Hey KD, the only thing better than seeing your new rocks is to see the new jewellry that you make from them! Great job!
Tinman - You can shape with a standard bench grinder but you can't use the Aluminum Oxide wheels that come standard on them. Put on some green silicon oxide wheels and keep a cup of water handy to wet and cool your rocks when you are grinding (and a cold wet beer to wet anything else that needs wetting). Not as nice as diamond wheels and cab making machines, but it's also a lot cheaper. That all I use.
