I am going to build a flat lap, but I'm wondering what the pros and cons are of a vertical lap versus a horizontal. I'm unsure, too, about what grits I need to polish slabs. Needless to say, I am quite new to this, though I've been tumbling for awhile. Thank you for your help.

The issue with a lap is how to cool. I horizontal lap can have water dripping on it. I have some laps that screw on to the end of my cabbing machine and I hold the stone with one hand a spray bottle in the other. There are people here who rough shape cabs and then tumble so multiple laps to sand and polish wouldn't be necessary. If you are trying to do all the work on the lap the grits would be similar to the wheels on a cabbing machine.
