Finished this one this weekend. I'm wondering if the bail is a little short? It kind of appears so in the picture, but in person it works. Any thoughts, comments appreciated and thanks for looking.

Mike - you’ve come a long ways quickly in wrapping! Can you point me roughly towards where you learned to wrap and what materials etc?

Mike - you’ve come a long ways quickly in wrapping! Can you point me roughly towards where you learned to wrap and what materials etc? Thanks, I'll take that as a compliment- although I still totally consider myself a beginner with a long way to go! I got a lot of advice and tips from some fine folks here on RTH and watched some YouTube videos, oxanacrafts videos are pretty good, just search those. As far as materials go, just pm me and I'll tell you all of my secrets. Just kidding, I'm not sure if I'm the best one to ask for advice on materials but I use 22G dead soft square wire for the wrap and on this wrap I used 22G dead soft half round gold wire for the bindings. Seriously, if you need any help or more info just send me a message and even though I don't know how much help I'll be I will be glad to help however I can.

Beautiful cab and wrap. I would not worry as long as it hangs he way you intended.

Beautiful cab and wrap. I would not worry as long as it hangs he way you intended. Thanks Beth! It actually does, for a wonky cab. I know it's an "organic" shape (to quote rockjunquie), but I couldn't bear to lose the green color at the bottom right of the cab.

I like it. You definitely have your trademark style Mike, and it’s good. Most all of your cabs have great color.

One of these days I really need to learn a new technique, however. I appreciate the compliment, my friend.

Do all The Beach Boys songs sound the same? I like them all, but they have a trademark sound. Not to contradict a friend, but no two of your cabs are the same at all. Mikes Trademarks ™️ 1. Freeformed to compliment the patterns and colors. 2. Wrapped with square wire, usually silver colored. 3. No two are the same, but they tend to a teardrop shape with one end smaller.

Your bail is fine, miket. There's enough there to comfortably use whatever you want to hang it from.
I like it! The gold and silver on this one complements the stone.

Good to hear, thanks Robin! Yeah, I ordered some more gold wire for the bindings so now I'm looking through my cabs to see what will work with it. 😁

Looks great. If it works in person then it's all good although I'm wondering if it could be too much wrapping before the bail. Does that make sense? It almost seems to me that the wrap on the bail is very thick or heavy which would make the bail look smaller.

It makes perfect sense and I agree, it's something that I've been trying to work on. I think I'm still needing more confidence that my wraps will be secure. 😀

I struggle with that confidence too. I have found that it helps me to tumble polish the piece with steel shot in a small vibe tumbler I have. I figure if it can survive being tumbled then it's secure. I also wiggle the stone and rub it across my shirt to make sure it doesn't have any wiggle or wires sticking out to catch on clothing.

Really, you tumble polish the piece? Scary! Those are all things I should probably do if I'm going to get serious about this. Thanks Diane.

It was a bit scary to do it but I figured if it breaks or has problems I'd rather it happen before I sell it or give it to someone. Most of the rock I use is agate or jasper so it's hard enough to go through the tumbler without issues. So far, fingers crossed, I haven't had one come apart or break. I learned about doing that from another wrapper on here, I believe it was rockjunquie who said she used a 3lb rotary tumbler with steel shot. I got a good deal on a minisonic vibratory tumbler so I gave it a try with that. I put in a little bit (maybe 1/2 teaspoon) of 20 Mule Team Borax and mixed steel shapes tumbling medium and let it run for about 20 minutes. The pieces come out nice and shiny plus I know they are going to stay together. I don't know about doing it with craft wire but it works well for copper, silver, and gold filled wire.

...and it also work-hardens the piece so it won’t bend out of shape as easily.

Yup, tumbling works great to clean, debur and work harden the piece. And, like Diane says, it's a good way to test durability.

Quick question for drocknut and rockjunquie... It may be obvious, but do you tumble wraps one at a time? I would think yes. Thanks!
