It was cutting fine then next cut stopped half way through. I ran a grinding wheel to sharpen, no difference. It will cut a 6" x 3" horizontal but if I stand it up no go. I'm using an old 18" HP.

There is a lot more saw blade in contact with the rock for that rock in its vertical position (once the cut has proceeded). That can mean added friction and work for the blade and lubricants. I'd dress the blade with something softer, or the standard alternatives and then consider how to determine what else could be causing it to stop. Is it binding, is the belt slipping or the feed mechanism loose. Sometimes a rock slips in the vice and stops the blade as it drifts out of the line of feed.

Sounds like a binding issue to me. Only because I've had that happen on smaller saws if the vise raised up during the cut.

An obvious lesson I learned recently; dirty oil. My saw kept binding despite dressing and adjusting the clutch. I used a stainless steel wok ladle to scoop out a gallon of muck from the bottom and added a gallon of fresh oil. My saw now cuts like a dream.
