I got a small piece of OJ rough on fullmoon. It had a lot of druse and some poppies. I thought it might make some interesting cabs. I cut the largest face and it had all the personality of dried mud. I rotated ninety degrees and overhung the piece over the board about a half inch so I can cut a new face which has bands of druse running thorugh it. I need to wait until tommorow for the glue to dry and find out how I did. Does it fracture into small pieces? Will I be able to get usable preforms? Will it hold up to the wheels? Will it polish? How many poppies on the preforms? So many questions and no naswers.

Since it was warm recently, I decided the glue was dry enough. I made a facing cut parallel to the natural face. When the glue soaks off, I'll reglue with the new face. I did some grinding on the smaller piece and it was very solid and hard. I don't know if I will get a cab from these pieces and don't know the patterns of the slabs I will cut and things are going ok. Face Back

I glued the new face to a board and should be able to start slabbing tomorrow afternoon; 2 or 3 slices.

I glued the new face to a board and should be able to start slabbing tomorrow afternoon; 2 or 3 slices. Two days to dry! What type of glue are you using? I use Wood Glue and I let the glue dry for about 2 weeks or more. I tried after 5 or 6 and the rock popped off. Now I glue, write a date on the wood and let it sit. I guess if one is in a hurry for a particular rock my long dry method is not good. I have so many rocks to cut and glue that waiting is not a big deal. Also moving on to summer heat in a couple weeks so using the 24 inch is going to be limited to 1 or 2 cuts a day.

I use water glass and am generally working with small rough. Rough arrived yesterday. I cut a face and glued early evening. I cut a new face early afternoon soaked off the glue and reglued a few hours later. The weather has been warm.

I slabbed the piece. As an exercise it was successful. Not much results. Not enough colored poppies. I made a free form out of the natural face and will polish the perimiter and leave the middle natural. I like oddities so I'll waste some more time on it.
