I bought a table for $5.00 at the city wide garage sale last fall and have been wanting to do a mosiac top with my rocks. I have taken the thing apart to sand and refinish it. This morning I got out the top and put stones on it to see how it would look. Here are the results. I know I will rearrange a number of times, but here's the first shot at it. This is from standing about it and shooting down on the top. A view from the side. And from the end Since some of these slabs/rocks are thicker than the inlaid part of the table, I am either going to have to grind them down thinner so they won't stick out above the wood or I am going to have a cut a piece of wood to glue onto the top of the wood already there. I have some pieces of 1/8" cedar I can cut strips of to add on. It's much prettier than the wood the table is made of, but don't know if it would blend well with the legs. Guess I will just have to sand the legs, stain or do whatever with them, and see how it looks. Or, I may just take my handy-dandy little saw and go cut down a couple of 3 or so inch diameter cedar trees and make some new legs for it! Anyhoo, what say ya'll? Honest opinions! llana

That is going to be so cool once you have it finished! What a neat idea. Have you seen the tiffany style lamps people have done with thin slabs of ocean jasper? Those are really cool too and go for high dollar if sold!

Are you gonna grout them in or glass over it?

Hey Llana, I think that's a great idea! I was just thinking about making a footstool by cutting a slab of Oak and carving a design on it, but now I don't know. I've got a box full of slabs waiting for me to do something, and I like your table idea. WTG!

Hey Llana , your are on the right track to stardom of table inlay. I was hoping to do something similar one day in the near future.

Beautimus, Llanna, and youre just getting statrted. The stones fit so well just as they are, I wouldn't change a thing. Raising the top up just a hair with the cedar sounds good, and, if you don't want the acrylic to be too thick (if that's what you are using) cover the rocks and do like Mich says, put glass over it. Great idea!

I have an idea! If the rocks are different heights, how about turning it into a display table? That would be so cool as you could change the rocks, shells or whatever from time to time. What do you think?

Thanks all. Hopefully when I am finished this $5.00 piece of crap table will be something I can sell for ALOT more than I paid for it.
I haven't decided if it's going to be an outside table or inside table. If it's gonna be an outside table, I will use grout, but will also have to either shellac or put at least 4 or 5 coats of polyurethane/tung oil on the wood so the wood will hold up out in the weather. If it's an inside table, I will use a polymer finish over the rocks and just a couple of poly/tung oil for the finish on the wood.
I had planned on getting started on sanding the legs and such today, but went and spent the afternoon with my sister. We helped my nephew move some of their junk to their new house, then spent the rest of the afternoon sitting on the porch doing nothing. It was so nice for both of us to just sit and do nothing for a few hours!
My neice and her hubby are in Croatia - he's from there. Got a post card from her and she said she was bringin home a few rocks for me. Wonder what kind of rocks they have in Croatia? Can't wait to see them!

Another cool idea is to make mosiac flower pots. Take clay flower pots and do a type of mosiac design with your favorite rocks, grout and your done!!!

looking good, at the Iowa Paint Store (in Sioux Falls S. D.) they had an acrlyic finish that claimed to be water clear and would not yellow I will try to remember to call them tomorrow and find out the brand name. I remember wanting some for my end table project I want to shine a light up from underneath to show off the rocks

The table looks great the way it is Llana. I think I would build up the edges of the table with a contrasting wood(like walnut, mahogany, etc) cut a rabbet on the inside edge and place a piece of 1/4" glass over it. Then when you get tired of looking at these rocks, you could remove these and put new ones in. You got a good start, keep posting pics as you go.
