We're headed to Utah tomorrow......don't give me any grief about "stay at home/shelter in place".........we've been safely locked down since March 2nd........My son needs my help with a project he's finally got the time and money to complete, rebuilding a 72 Comet (engine), high performance 4.9L turbo straight 6 (I've built 2, many moon's ago), and we haven't seen him since November 2019.......everyone is healthy and we missed our annual February Pheasant hunt and April girl's get-together trips....!
Anyway, this time, we've decided to take our time, see some country, and branch out to Moab, my wife hasn't been there and is curious.......So, I have heard a lot about Lin's collections and the families rock shop........they are open and I'd like to look around. We won't have time to hound like I'd prefer, maybe pick-up a few tips and some nice local rough tumble....
Any thoughts.......?

I haven't been to Moab, so I can't help you in that regard, but I hope you have a most excellent trip! It sounds like a long overdue family get together.

When we drove through that area, it was surreal. Seemed like we were on another planet... until we saw THE ROCK SHOP!! IT WAS WONDERFUL, crowded with goodies. A nice old man lived there and showed us around. Entire dinosaur skeletons in the back yard waiting for adoption. He said neither museums nor universities were interested. Unbelievable!
It’s a nice peaceful trip. Enjoy!

Have stopped at the rock shop in Moab a number of times. Good selection for a small shop. We usually pick up something found/mined in Utah. They have quite a few fossils and minerals as well as some lapidary materials. They also have finished jewelry. We usually stop at the Blue Pig for a rack of ribs.
Dunno if the Parks have opened yet. Arches is fabulous! Our first stop there yielded almost 600 pictures in about 4 1/2 hours. This is a good time of year for Canyonlands because the air is clear. Recently the wildfires have spoiled the visibility of late summer/fall visits.

Did you know that Moab is basically shut down? I know for a while there were no hotels and they were not allowing visitors to camp anywhere in the county. Much of the state will reopen to Yellow on Saturday May 16th, Moab and Grand County will not. I guess it's worth the effort if you're in the area but you might want to check if the shop is open. Arches and Canyonlands National Parks will not begin reopening until May 29th.
I have stopped at the rock shop, it's a really interesting place. We didn't buy anything but enjoyed browsing. There was a lot of interesting rocks and bones.

I have heard much good about the Ford 300CI inline 6 but never knew they put a turboed one in a Comet. Haven't been to Utah, other than sitting in a plane in the Airport, since 1975. I plan to explore it when things clear out a bit, a friend organizes a fossil get together annually and I was looking forward to being able to attend. I hope it works out for you, maybe a call or email might get you a visit to the shop by appointment, some of the lockdown rules allow for that.

Pizzano, if you get a chance swing over to Hanksville and visit with Cathy Rosenbaum at Rocking Riddle Rock Shop on the west end of town, north side of the road. She lives behind the shop and even if it's closed I'm sure she would open it for you. She can direct you to awesome hounding nearby also.

It was good to see the kids........even though things around Salt Lake weren't exactly "normal", there was plenty to keep us busy for 4 days...!

It’s a nice peaceful trip. Enjoy! Thanks Pat.......you're spot on about the landscape around there, nothing like I've ever seen except near the Saint George area. I took a few pic's, will post them later. The Rock Shop was "semi" closed. Could not explore inside the shop or the dino skeletons, but the interesting local material on the shelves out in front of the store could be purchased, cash only. None of us brought along much cash........lol
The story behind the lack of adoption interest of the dino skeletons is interesting......... here are some of the reasons that have been given.....Since Lin was not a recognized professional archaeologist, specimens were incomplete, were not removed or sampled to "proper" specification, and the real clincher is that Lin would not disclose the actual locations where the remains were unearthed.........museums and universities require complete transparency, they are concerned about lawsuits and other government oversight issues.........On the happier side, one of the specimens he has, was/has been verified and his name has been associated with that species.
It was a nice trip.....

Thanks Taylor...........State and local parks were open, got a few pic's of one of the smaller arches tucked away behind a couple of major hills.......not Fed grounds. We stopped at The Moab Brewery and had lunch. Great burgers and a few nice selections of their craft beer.

One third of the town was shut down, one third was open and the last third was completely confused as to what to do.......lol
Local walking, hiking and biking trails were open, a few private camping sites were open, but no State or Fed camping appeared to be open. Yes.....lot's of interesting local material was on display in front of the shop.....but we lacked cash.

You're right on......they never put a 300CI inline 6 (from the factory) in either the Comet or the Maverick.......but Ford put a ton of them in vans and trucks of the same era. If you wanted a street drag with rear wheel torque 1.5 times the rated horse power, the inline 6 was the way to go.......we just slapped a turbo on them, inter-cooler, throttle plate injected carb, beefed up the intake/exhaust and modified the motor mounts to those Comet's/Maverick's that came stock with the 302....That's what were doing with "72" Comet......wife and I got to son's place Friday night, Saturday we spent the day modifying motor mounts, engine manifold mod's and wiring connects/disconnects.........we/he is using a "chipped" based computer set-up.........by 11:30pm that same day/night, we had the engine and turbo system installed.........the boy is now on his own, but he has a couple bud's that are gear heads who listened to my advice. I suspect it will be fired up next weekend, but he is a long way still from rolling her out for a road test.....his tranny (auto) is ready to bolt up, but rear end (solid) and suspension/brakes still need refinement.......he can handle that........it' his labor of love, I'm just an engine guy.......lol
No appointments at The Rock Shop accepted.....!

Here's just a few pic's of the trip and our short hike around the State park small arches area....:
We managed to pick a few interesting stones while hiking around the trails......rock hunting is discouraged at this park......just a pocket full....lol......But my boy had been busy collecting, the last month or so, while on trail rides. I've got about 8lbs to sort through and cut, for another thread.
It was a fine 5 days in Utah....COVID19 and all.........!

I detoured a bit off the designated trail, up to a vantage point to get those two shots..........followed a well used bunny trail and stayed out of the cactus. Didn't bring a wide angle lens, just a 70-210mmD telephoto.
