I just re-discovered a vt-12 dual hopper vibratory tumbler in the back of my garage, and it is very old and musty. I cannot get it to work though, I think it is a problem with the motor. When I plugged it in and flipped the switch, there was a faint buzzing and it started smoking. I turned it off and have not touched it since. Any tips on what to do?

flip it over, see if the belts are intact, see if the motor turns easily by hand. or just ship it to me

Break out the oil and hope you turned it off fast enough when it smoked. Try and get the motor to turn freely with the belts off.

The Belts are intact, And it does not turn almost at all. doesn't bode well, remove the belts to make sure it's not the countershaft bearings that are seized. Otherwise I'd disassemble the motor to free it up, there are/were greased bearings in there.

I had to replace my motor. Someone on the RTH found a cheap source, can't remember who it was. It is a 3450 rpm motor.

So all the motors I see online have one shaft on one end. Mine seems to have one shaft coming out of each end. Is this unusual?

Split shaft motors aren’t as common, but they are made and they are normal.

Weren't you looking at a used Sonic ?

Make sure the dimensions are the same as the one you have. I found one with the same frame number but it wasn't the same dimensions. No room to spare in that unit... MrP

MrP There is a larger bearing set up on the shaker shaft on some models. Mine are the small Sealmasters. Yes, tight for space in there.

My motor had dried bearings to point of damaged bearings.

Take the motor out soak it in Mineral spirits overnight or Longer to dissolve the oil and grease and Then plug in see if it works. if it hums it still has life left in it
