Some of you know I was wanting to start working with Jade. I had ordered a piece from a supply house site unseen. It wasn't much so I thought what the heck. I have other pieces coming that I have at least seen a picture of. I have been craming everything I could find into my head preparing to do some simple work with Jade. There was so much I didn't know and when it show up today in the mail I thought well it's time to get started. A lot of time was preparing the Jade into a usable block with little waste. Measuring and re-measuring. Then the first cut. My little Rock Rascal cut it wonderfully once I set up a guide to keep the cuts parallel. I sliced off one piece big enough for the cab I was wanting to try and make and then proceeded to trim it up so I could start the grinding and shaping process. It will take a lot more work and understanding to get comfortable working with it. It grinds so much different than agate or jasper. Through the whole process I kept saying is this every going to turn into something I can be proud of. For me the answer was yes. I am so happy with the results of my first jade project I can't wait to try different things with it. Below is what I accomplished. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Yes, the white spots are part of the stone. The jade isn't gem grade. It had some white, black and red inclusions. Some of it may have to do with it being an outside piece next to the rhine. It's suppose to be Wyoming jade but not good quality I think. It is sure good enough for me to practice with and to show off to my friend. They wouldn't have a clue anyways. The cab really does look a lot better in person. I guess they all do. That jade cab actually looks better after it sat for a few hours. Maybe the polish had to cure a little.

They're not that noticeable when I look at it in person. A constellation from heaven. I've heard say Jade has magic powers.

Gary……that's my second cab ever. I don't have enough time left to become a master jade carver, but I am going to try awful hard to become a simple journeyman carver. Simple as in simple carvings. No offense to you great journeyman/women tradesmen out there.
